At Mass this morning a neighbor asked my husband why he wasn’t wearing red for St. Joseph.
(Dennis is a full-blooded Italian and known devotee of St. Joe.)
He’d never heard of that tradition and neither had I, in spite of having lived in Italy for a time.
Here’s one explanation.
We do NOT wear “red” on St. Joseph’s Day…. we DO wear “purple”, i.e. the color reserved to royalty which represents the royal line of David passed to Jesus as the seed of Jesse. Cardinals of our Roman Catholic Church also... READ MORE

Around my house, we call them “human billboards” and they jury is split on their merit. I will admit to hating them—and even to refusing to do business with anyone who employs them. My sons, on the other hand, think they are cool “entrepreneurs” and wouldn’t hesitate to do this type of work that is said to pay pretty well. This little video gave me a slightly different perspective:
Honestly, I do think it is wonderful that there are jobs available for people who WANT and NEED to work to feed... READ MORE

We are back from a very exciting, harrowing, grand adventure to The Circus. What a time!
Here’s the thought I had, during the nearly three hours we sat watching the cutting-edge flips and daring deeds: what has become of me?
Growing up, my family went to the circus fairly often. My parents brought us whenever it came to town; this was one of those “special things” we did as a family. I loved it and I have so many wonderful memories of sitting in amazement, watching the acrobats and lion tamers as... READ MORE

My parents-in-law own a condo near one of Michigan’s best ski hills. Yes, I realize that’s like saying “one of Kansas’s best beaches,” and with just 500 vertical feet it is fairly unimpressive as a ski resort. It still has enough runs to keep us busy for a weekend, though, and we enjoy our visits each winter.
Generally we go up in January and in March. In January we’re lucky if the temperature is in the double digits, but March is spring skiing. Outdoors, it’s usually about 30°F and sunny. This... READ MORE

I am a big fan of outdoor play for kids. Some winter months it’s not very practical here in New Hampshire, but I do my best to maintain a strict “Spend at least 60 minutes outdoors” policy for my kids, even in the cold weather.
We are fortunate in that we have a large yard and so they have no problem meeting my outdoor play quota (and lots more!) during nice weather in the spring, summer, and fall.
I was surprised to read this in a recent article about the importance of outdoor play in the Pittsburgh... READ MORE
