Why self-diagnosis is a bad idea

Here are a few things I recommend you avoid, things I’ve learned the hard way and I’d love for you to side-step the pain.

1. Never try on your skinny jeans six weeks after giving birth. You feel skinny? That’s great! Back away from the jeans. This will not end well.
2. Never evaluate your life, your mothering skills, the state of your home, finances or marriage when you are having hormonal shifts. Once again: Never. Ends. Well.
3. Finally, NEVER GOOGLE SYMPTOMS. Do you ever do this? It’s a really... READ MORE

Discerning Vocations & Marian Devotions

This week on the Faith & Family Live Cast (click here to listen or click on the player above) Arwen, Rebecca and I take on two wonderful topics.  In our fist segment, we look at the topic of vocations, and the “Call within a call” that Arwen recently wrote about.  The start of every school year is a renewed time to reexamine the work we are doing, to rededicate ourselves to family and work, and to jumpstart new projects.  What new projects are you planning for this year? In what ways are you rededicated... READ MORE

Dan, With a Hammer

What man through yonder window breaks?

Here’s a peek at the view from my living room window a couple of days ago.

It’s Dan, with a hammer.

In preparation for the coming winter, we have been replacing some of our windows with more energy efficient ones. And by “‘we” I mean Dan.

Because I don’t do that kind of thing. He does.

When we were dating in high school, Dan once drew me a picture of a rabbit. I held on to that drawing for years because it was something he had made with his own hands—for me.

Little did I know that years later,... READ MORE

A New Mother Flounders

Ask a Priest vol. 25

Q: I am a new mom and, as much as I looked forward to motherhood, I must admit that I am floundering. I feel tired all the time, I hate my new body, and even though I love my new son, I find him very hard to appreciate most of the time—especially when he keeps me up all hours of the night.

I find myself resenting my husband (who honestly is very helpful and supportive) because he works a job outside of the home and gets to sleep regular hours. Everyone keeps telling me that this will get easier... READ MORE

Bananano

What flavor grosses you out?

This evening my sister and I were shopping at a discount store that has bags of various specialty candies by the checkout.

I picked up one or two and looked them over, then reached for a bag that was backward on the shelf.

My sister laughed as I let out a little shriek and dropped it when I realized what it contained: banana gummy candy.

I’ve been known to enjoy the occasional gummy bear (the clear pineapple-flavored ones are my favorite) and I really like those sour apple gummy rings, but banana... READ MORE

September!

How I love you

There is something so magical and downright inspirational about September. I know it’s all about beginnings—it has forever meant the start of school, a return to structure, a fresh start. I love September and find I always have a renewed sense of purpose as we make our way into Fall (that glorious, glorious season!).

In the midst of celebrating September 1 today, I found myself singing this little classic (gotta love Neil) and when I watched the video tonight (after looking for a picture to go... READ MORE
