Bakin' Bacon

a new-to-me effort-saving approach

I love to eat bacon, but you know what I don’t love? Standing over the stove while it cooks. And that job, never fun, is especially complicated by having to keep multiple young children away from the hot grease.

A few years ago I tried other ways to cook bacon. Microwaving couldn’t give me the crispy texture I like. Baking, according to the most common recipe I found, yielded strips that were nearly... READ MORE

On Friendship

we know it's important - but how do you make it happen?

I was fortunate to attend the Behold conference last weekend. The speakers (especially the lovely, brave Kate Wicker) were inspiring and the Holy Spirit was definitely present there, not just in the Adoration chapel and during Mass but among all the attendees, women of every age and vocation doing their best to learn about God and serve him.

My twins came with me, and fortunately a friend came along... READ MORE

Crunchy at Home

Make your own potato chips!

This is an indulgence, and therefore not particularly Lenten, but I did it last week and I just can’t wait until Easter to share.

Have you ever made homemade potato chips?

My goodness. If you are at all a fan of potatoes and/or fried things, you must try this.

These are not your grocery store’s potato chips. They’re a different breed entirely: with strong potato flavor and exactly as salty and crisp... READ MORE

Lenten Adventures

Illness kick-starts my season of penance

I was going to give up sugar in my tea for Lent.

A hot sweet strong cup each morning is one of my daily pleasures, and I thought sacrificing it would be just enough penance in a life that is, day-to-day, already pretty tough.

But on Tuesday before Lent started, the day I posted this, it suddenly came to me that denying my sweet tooth was not enough. Instead, here was my resolution: to stop feeling... READ MORE

Curveballs Come

when life won't let up

2011 was a rough year for our family. Blessed, incredibly so, but rough. Baby twins are not for the faint of heart, and much of the year was a blur for me.

When 2012 began, my husband and I breathed a sigh of relief, because this was going to be our year. This year life would be simple and predictable - and easier as the twins got older - and we’d be able to relax and enjoy our little family.

Except... READ MORE

Rolls to Gobble

Making sandwich meat? Try serving it on these homemade yeast buns!

My husband loves slow-cooked shredded meat with barbecue sauce. I… don’t.

I appreciate the simplicity of the recipe,* it’s just that barbecue is not my favorite. My husband enjoys it so much, though, and it’s so easy, that we still eat it fairly regularly.

When I have time, here’s how I make the meal delicious for me: by making homemade rolls to serve the meat on.

I know homemade bread is not everyone’s... READ MORE

"Being Catholic means 'paying a price'"

a bishop speaks truth

“What we bring is not an onerous burden – we bring a liberation. And people may not know they do want this good news from Jesus but it really is what they’re looking for.”

That’s a quote from Archbishop Allen Vigneron of Detroit, interviewed during a recent visit to the Vatican. I’m proud that he’s local to here. He’s a great man, and it’s a great interview, full of truth.

Read the whole thing at the Catholic News Agency website - it’s well worth your time.

Whither Weather?

how's winter treating you?

On Groundhog’s Day my husband joked that the little guy came out of his hole and declared that winter had already been over for six weeks.

Anyone else feel like the season is missing this year? Here in Michigan, we usually get buried by at least a couple snowstorms each year, and have a week or two of single-digit temperatures. Those things have not happened this winter. We’ve had rain instead, and... READ MORE

Twin Giggles

Enjoy!

Would a video of a baby laughing brighten your day? Would it be even better if it were two babies?

I’ve been loving how easy it is to make my twins crack up these days, and yesterday it occurred to me: other people might enjoy this view! Ambrose is on the left in brown, Linus on the right in white. Ignore the dorky noises their mama is making; I’ll do pretty much anything to get a laugh out of my little ones.
