Patience, Please

Dealing with kids without losing your cool?

I was in the shower today, leisurely rinsing off soap, when I heard a shriek.  Camilla normally reads books by the door of the bathroom while I shower, but she’d wandered away, and something awful had clearly happened to her.  She was wailing.

I called for her but she didn’t come, so I bolted out of the shower, grabbed my towel, and ran around the corner, imagining her trapped under a piece of furniture... READ MORE

Worth Fighting For

The beauty of ordinary living

Today we observe the anniversary of September 11, 2001, the day of the biggest terrorist attack on US soil.  It’s a good day to remember and to pray for all those who were killed or wounded because of those attacks, and for those who lost loved ones and whose lives were changed for the worse because of that day.

I think it’s also a good day to salute and pray for all those who are serving to protect... READ MORE

Why Math Rocks

Learn something; sharpen your brain

Since our discussion about education, I’ve been thinking about an aspect of the topic that is dear to my heart.

I feel very strongly about this:

Math and science are awesome for everyone.

The small Catholic liberal arts college from which I graduated required that all students take one semester of mathematics and two semesters of science as part of the core curriculum, acknowledging that a true liberal... READ MORE

Frying Extravaganza

Making donuts makes me happy

I made donuts this weekend.

Actually, I made donuts twice this weekend, which is certainly a record for me.

Last year my sister and I started a tradition of making homemade cake donuts and caramel apples to honor the coming of fall.

It’s not quite fall yet, but we’re anticipating the season, so we did it on Saturday.  The caramel apples turned out okay, but the donuts were kind of a flop.  I mean,... READ MORE

Celebrate Mary’s Birthday!

Ask her to watch over your children

Today’s feast, the Nativity of Mary, has gained a lot of meaning for me since I became a mother myself.  I’ve gone through one birth and am anticipating another in about five months, so birth days in general have become a lot more significant to me.

There is nothing in the Bible about the Blessed Virgin’s parents, and the little we know about them is from the apocrypha, writings not included in the... READ MORE

Old-Fashioned Education

Things have changed in a hundred and fifty years

Like I mentioned last week, I’m working my way through the Little House books.  One thing I’m noticing is this: education sure was different back then.

On the first day that Laura and Carrie go to school in their new town in The Long Winter, the teacher reads the twenty-third psalm to start the day.  “Of course Laura knew all the psalms by heart,” the text says, and my eyebrows shot up.  Of course... READ MORE

More on Marrying Young

A personal reflection

Needless to say, I’ve been following the comments on Rebecca’s post from earlier this week with much interest.  I don’t have much to add to the arguments - I think Rebecca’s elegant thinking and concise writing have covered pretty much everything I’d say on the topic - but because I have had the experience of marrying at an age that this culture considers very young, I’d like to share my story, just... Sibling Love

How to help children adjust to the presence of a new baby?

My sister has a baby, Matthew.  He is six weeks old, and my daughter Camilla loves him.  She talks about “baby Mafew” all the time.  She gets excited when we’re going to see him.  When she’s around him she wants to be as close to him as possible - so much so that I’ve had to make a rule that she may only touch his hands and feet, and kiss the top of his head.

She’s fascinated by baby activities;... READ MORE

Feeding Toddlers

Need suggestions for easy-to-prepare foods

My husband and I are greatly enjoying having a toddler, but one of the things that is much more complicated with a toddler than with a baby is food.  Feeding our daughter was so simple back when all she ate was milk!

Fortunately Camilla is not an extremely picky eater, although she is not noticeably adventurous.  She does become rather attached to certain foods - for instance, she eats so much whole-milk... READ MORE

Labor Day Special

With extended family nearby, even minor holidays are occasions

When I was a kid I didn’t see my extended family much.  My mother’s parents and only brother lived five hundred miles away, and my dad’s many siblings and their children were scattered all over the country.  We did visit sometimes, usually in the summer, but on holidays it was always just us: my parents, my five younger siblings, and me.  It was fun, it was just relatively small.

A decade later, the... READ MORE
