Chore War

The younger kids have not been pulling their weight around here.

One of the effects of having a large family is that, if you’re not careful, your youngest kids can become totally spoiled. There is always someone available, it seems, who is willing to indulge a preschooler or cater to the whims of toddler.

In recent weeks, it has come to my attention that the younger kids have not been pulling their weight at chore time around here. It’s just so much easier, I have... READ MORE

Good and Faithful Servant

from today's Gospel

His master said to him, `Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a little, I will set you over much; enter into the joy of your master.’
—Matthew 25:21

Lord, give us grace always to use our gifts for the good of Your people and Your Church.

Sarah Palin and the Politics of Motherhood

Should a mom be running for VP?
http://www.creativeminorityreport.com/2008/08/rosie-republican-2008.html

After John McCain’s announcement of Sarah Palin as his running mate yesterday, I followed discussions of the news with great interest—particularly those among Catholics.

The observations about the Sarah Palin nomination that I found most interesting were those that had nothing at all to do with abortion, the environment, gun control, the war, or typical politics of any kind. They were the ones that... READ MORE

Dear McDonald’s

Seriously?

This is a child’s plaything?

Try “Nightmare in a Happy Meal.”

Foul Play

Dirty kids are happy kids.

The other day, while I was making dinner, Raphael’s small face appeared at the window.

“Come and take a picture of me, Mama,” he said. “A picture with my pie.”

I can never turn down requests like these. I grabbed the camera and headed out to find him at work in his “kitchen.”

I think that some of the scenes I happen upon outdoors at my house might make some moms uneasy. There are a lot of bare feet.... READ MORE

In the Neighborhood

How do you live?

A red car pulled into our driveway early this morning. I was heading out with the trash when our barking dog alerted me to this intrusion.

“Can I help you?” I asked the man who stood by his car, eying the dog warily.

“I’m lost,” he said. “I’m looking for the McClarens? They live on this road, I think.”

“Sorry, I don’t know them,” I told him.

It was true. The fact of the matter is, however, that the... READ MORE

Blueberry Days

savoring the last sights and tastes of summer.

“I am thinking of a story right now,” Gabby said to me as we picked blueberries beneath a bright and endless sky yesterday morning.

As August days do here in New Hampshire, the day had started out cold. But now the growing strength of the nearly midday sun warmed our shoulders and coaxed us out of layers.

“What story?” I asked as I unzipped the baby’s sweatshirt and parked him in front of a loaded... READ MORE

Helpful Hints

group blog reading made easy

I posted some information in this week’s Coffee Talk that might be useful to all readers, so I thought I should share it here too.

For those who are used to reading our bloggers’ personal blogs, navigating through the group blog format here at Faith & Family Live! might be a bit overwhelming.

If you prefer to read only one blogger at a time, you can do that here. Clicking on the name of any blogger in the “posted by” section at the top of a blog post, brings you to “their” page that shows only their posts.

See here: Rachel, Rebecca, Lisa, Arwen or Danielle. Happy reading!
