When I Grow Up

I want to be just like my mom!

I’m feeling a bit blue this afternoon, as I just delivered my mom to the airport after a fun packed two week visit.  I’m missing her already, and her flight has just departed!

Unlike those of you with family close by, my family is scattered all over the country.  Nana and Gramps currently reside in Gulfport, Mississippi, so her visits are precious times.  I can mark the passing of the years by looking... READ MORE

What Would You Take?

If you had to evacuate your home in minutes, what would you grab?

This past weekend, my mom and I visited Southern California and spent Saturday at Disneyland.  I hope to share a few photos of our trip this week, but today, a more serious topic is on my heart.

As you’ve likely heard, horrific wildfires are ravaging Southern California this week.  The picture you see here was taken at Disneyland on Saturday - although we were a safe distance from the fire, the... READ MORE

Capturing Family Memories

Family stories and history are priceless

At Real Simple this month, they are offering a free download and an article entitled “Get to Know Your Family and Friends Better”

With the holidays approaching, many of us will find ourselves in the midst of extended family and friends.  In true “Martha and Mary” fashion, we’ll likely find ourselves torn between the tasks of hospitality and serving, and the desire to spend quality time with our... READ MORE

Disney DOs and DON’Ts

Share your tips for visiting the happiest place on earth

As you read this, my mom and I will be traveling five hours south of my home in Fresno to spend Saturday at Disneyland with my brother, his wife and my adorable nephews.

Even though I live within driving distance of the “happiest place on earth”, it’s been several years since I last visited Disneyland.  We made a few trips to Disneyworld in Florida around in the late nineties and in 2000 for medical... READ MORE

Does Your Thanksgiving Look Like This?

You simply have to watch this hilarious video before you plan your big day!

The good folks over at Catholic Media House are sharing some of their most popular videos online and this little ditty about Thanksgiving had me laughing so hard I almost cried!

A Thanksgiving Moment from Catholic Media House on Vimeo.

In our family, my Daddy was always responsible for cooking the Thanksgiving dinner.  But somehow, that tradition has not trickled down to his sons-in-law.  So for... READ MORE

Remembering our Vets

A prayer on Veteran's Day

Today, we recall the tremendous service and sacrifice of so many men and women who have courageously and valiantly served in the United States military.

More than just a day off of school or work, today should be a day of prayer, commemoration and thankfulness.  As families, this is the perfect day to commemorate our vets in a special way.  A few ideas for you and your family might include:

It’s All Good!

Saturday's song reminds us of God's blessings

I am a huge Ceili Rain fan - I fell in love with them last year when I saw them perform live in Anaheim.  I love their Irish influenced tunes, their energy and their lyrics.  In today’s song, lead singer Bob Halligan Jr. recognizes God’s goodness in the events of his life.  If you have a chance, head over to the Ceili Rain website for more incredible music videos.  This particular song always reminds me to pause and to see God’s handiwork with appreciative eyes - He does good in my life every day! In this month where we contemplate thankfulness, for what blessings are you thankful to God today in your life?

One for the Road

Praying in the car is a family tradition

Danielle’s and Awen’s posts this week have me thinking about places our family prays together.

Family prayers prior to mealtime and at bedtime are standards, but so is our morning drive time prayer.  As we pull away from the driveway, the boys and I reflexively recite our morning prayers, an Our Father and simple spontaneous prayers of thanksgiving and for intercession in particular situations. ... Nana on the Scene

Having my mom in my home makes everything run much more smoothly!

Lucky me!  My mom arrived for an extended visit on Wednesday and my home is already looking and running more smoothly, plus I’m a much happier camper.

Let me preface this by saying the my parents now live in Gulfport, Mississippi, so these visits feel very few and far between.  But the good news is that when my mom comes, she stays for a few weeks so it’s a nice, long time together.  Somehow, it... READ MORE
