Looking Good

Can hair and make-up change the world?

All this talk of Sarah Palin and her stunning wardrobe has got me thinking about fashion and looking good—things not always on the forefront of my mind as a housewife and freelance writer. When the main outing of my day involves grabbing a gallon of milk at the grocers, I’m rarely inclined to break out my haute couture.

Since giving birth to Henry, I have been in something of a beauty rut. A combination... READ MORE

What I love about Fall, y'all

Fall has finally come to the South, which somedays means we turn on our heat in the morning and our air conditioning in the afternoon.

The last few days have been perfect Fall weather—crisp air, blue skies, red and golden leaves. Like people all over this grand country, I love Fall.

A few of my favorite things of the season, in addition to the delicious weather, are all the special products you can... READ MORE

Label Maker Giveaway

Get ready to organize!

A few weeks ago, the DYMO company sent me a new LetraTag label maker to review. Maybe that explains why my posts of late have been so brief—I’ve been busy purging and organizing and labeling everything in sight.

I have never owned a label maker, nothing this official and nice anyway, and what joy this little machine brings!

A few words about the label maker: it is sleek and easy to use. So easy,... READ MORE

Could Danielle get this new blogger on board?

From today’s Zenit:
VATICAN CITY, OCT. 14, 2008 (Zenit.org).- One of the auditors at the world Synod of Bishops has suggested that Benedict XVI opens a blog to explain the word of God in an attractive way.

The proposal was made today by Agnes Lam, president of the Catholic Biblical Association of Hong Kong.

Among her suggestions to promote the word of God so that the faithful can come to know Christ,... READ MORE

Mask is the new black

For the last few days, ski masks have been all the rage around the Villa Balducci.

Yesterday, I discovered my son Charlie working on homework while wearing his fave new hat. Earlier that afternoon, the boys had been in the backyard playing soccer—while wearing ski masks. Actually, only two were wearing masks. Maybe the teams were shirts vs. masks?

The masks were recently acquired on deep discount... READ MORE

Money Quote

An important distinction

In Arwen’s compelling and well-written post below, F&F blogger Rebecca Teti makes a point in the comments that was a lightbulb moment for me.

“Since no candidate ever perfectly fulfills anyone’s slate of issues, everyone is a single-issue voter: by which we mean that some one issue is a deal-sealer or deal-breaker,” she writes, and goes on to note that the issue is really about having “the culture of life be the #1 priority.”

I have never clearly realized the issue as such and have often been reluctant to identify myself as a single-issue voter. There are so many important issues to consider in an election.

Having said that, when it all comes down to it, life trumps everything—life is the priority. It is the Number One Priority, and even if I am learned on a great many other topics, this one will always be at the heart of who gets my vote.

Nerd Alert

Is this a part of getting old?

I realize, as I flit around my house this afternoon, that I’m just as excited about the new set of spatulas I bought at Target this morning as I am about the sweet eye make-up I got at Sephora a few hours later.

Also, I’m currently using a rocking label maker and I will be telling you all about it next week—along with information concerning an exciting giveaway (and yes, that boy is my son Charlie).... READ MORE

‘Tact’ Vol. II

Oh that the Balducci boys would be so subtle

Yesterday, I was sporting a sweet pair of shiny, dangly earrings. I bought the earrings while the boys were at school and was wearing them last night at dinnertime.

“How do you like my new earrings,” I asked the boys.

“You look like a gypsy,” said Elliott.

“Uh, is that good or bad,” I said.

“It’s good,” he replied enthusiastically.

“Gypsy’s are awesome,” said Charlie, “they’ve got, like, guitars and guns and stuff!”
