About Rebecca Teti

Rebecca Teti Rebecca Teti is married to Dennis and has four children (3 boys, 1 girl) who -- like yours no doubt -- are pious and kind, gorgeous, and can spin flax into gold. A Washington, DC, native, she converted to Catholicism while an undergrad at the U. Dallas, where she double-majored in Political Philosophy & Drama. She holds an MA in Political Theory from Catholic University and pre-children worked a variety of non-profit jobs, including as a pro-life lobbyist and later director of the Center for Family Development in Bethesda, MD. Rebecca now writes from home, with special interest in marriage and family issues, whatever the Pope is doing, retrieving Lego bricks from underfoot, and homemade pie.

Today’s Audience

nothing can separate us from the love of God

A group of Spanish pilgrims came in costume for the Wednesday papal audience this morning, where the Holy Father delivered the next installment of his catechesis on St. Paul.

Picking up from last week’s homily on conversion, Benedict XVI reflects today on the apostolate that springs naturally, by an inner logic and necessity, from the profound experience of Christ. Here are my two favorite passages.... READ MORE

Sports On Sunday

Yay or Nay?

Remember the story of Eric Liddell, the Olympic runner of Chariots of Fire fame? He once refused to run an Olympic race he was favored to win because it was scheduled on a Sunday. The King of England begged him to run, yet he refused to violate the Sabbath.

Our family’s been spared any Sunday sports obligations so far, but as our kids grow, the prospect of Sunday games looms in both CYO and community... READ MORE

Here We Go Again

Look who's questioning settled Science

Democratic Vice Presidential nominee Joseph Biden appeared on Meet the Press yesterday, where host Tom Brokaw revisited the question of when life begins.

It was just last week that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi provoked the USCCB and some 26 individual bishops into publicly correcting a gross misstatement of Catholic teaching in the same forum.

Senator Biden, whose voting record on life issues is nominally... READ MORE

We Can All Just Get Along

finding who your friends are

Investigative journalist and Conservative commentator Robert Novak has been a fixture on the Washington scene for more than 40 years. During his long career he’s broken many stories—getting people to “spill” to him with his fabled creed, “You’re either a source or a target.”

This summer Mr. Novak was diagnosed with brain cancer. He writes about how his Catholic faith is helping him and about the outpouring of help and support he’s found—even from his ideological “enemies” in this lovely column, My Brain Tumor.

Two Arms To Arms

a kitchen table apostolate

The smallest apostolates can reap a big harvest. That’s the principle behind Project Mustard Seed, a pro-life apostolate begun in 1992 by David and Susan Arms. The idea is beautifully simple. The couple noticed that Life Decisions International published a “boycott list” of companies who contribute to Planned Parenthood. “What if those companies heard from us—a lot of us?” they thought.

Thus began... READ MORE

War Wounds

we're proud of our scars

This morning as I type, a few feet away from me the wizened old soldiers are re-telling their battle stories.

My Lincoln, 4, opens with the news that he has something he doesn’t want to tell his visiting playmates because it’s yucky and they wouldn’t want to hear it. (I can hear he is burning to tell.) “It’s not scary, though,” he assures them, and proceeds to spill it: “a few days ago I was sick... READ MORE

St. Paul 101

Join The Pope's "Student's Circle"

Envy is a vice, but I confess it freely: I’m jealous of the former students of Joseph Ratzinger who gather every summer with their friend and mentor to study whatever topic happens to catch their fancy. In previous years this “schulerkries” (student’s circle) has studied evolution, intelligent design, liturgical music—any number of things!

If like me you long to hold a seminar with arguably the finest... READ MORE

In Defense Of Marrying Young—Updated

Says You: Do We Marry Too Late?

Bristol Palin’s unwed pregnancy is not so unusual these days, but her solution—marriage—is. Mounting their hobby horse, the usual suspects have seized on her situation as evidence that abstinence education doesn’t work. Rather a leap of logic, that, since no matter what values her parents tried to instill, we don’t know what education she received at school.

Be that as it may, I want to ride that... READ MORE

Not What I Had In Mind

Evidence? Here's your evidence!

Our eldest kids have lived with their clutter-phobic mom for 11 and 9 years respectively, and I expect some things to rub off, you know? So when I left for a grocery run this afternoon, leaving them the assignment of distributing newly purchased school supplies into backpacks for tomorrow, I naturally assumed they’d take the items out of the bags, transfer them to the dining room table and pack methodically, using their classroom check-lists. I certainly did not expect them to plop down on the floor among the bags in an unwrapping frenzy worthy of Christmas morning.

Behold the sight that met my eyes—right in the hall—upon my return. And the mess extended in three directions beyond the borders of the photograph. Foolish mother! As soon as I saw this I had to laugh at the disconnect between my mental picture (bags all packed and neatly by the door, with excess supplies neatly put away) and the reality I’d have expected had I given any thought to it at all. Someone was asking for evidence that kids live here?

The backpacks are packed, though. So that’s something.

The Bishops Keep Speaking—Updated!

an update

Thought you might like an update on my post earlier this week about how our bishops have responded to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi’s statement that the Catholic Church doesn’t know when life begins. Since then, a few more bishops have issued statements. I’ve collected some links with a few sample quotations.

Bishop Samuel Aquila of Fargo writes:

As your bishop, I have the responsibility to present... READ MORE
