Vote For My Guy Or You're Stupid

“If you vote for him ... there will be no excuse for you before God.” —Facebook.
Election time is here! That singular moment when Catholics who hold exactly the same values based on faith, hope, and charity, tear each other apart.
Well not literally. But there is talk about sin and hell and who’s a real Catholic, and who isn’t. All based on the vote!
This is nothing new. It happens during every election.... READ MORE
What To Say?

I think I’ll go out today and tell all the dog walkers I meet exactly why I think they’re nuts.
What do you think of this lead in:
“I had three dogs myself so I KNOW what it’s like. I don’t miss it. I am NEVER having another one.”
What? Why are you giving me that look? Oh, you have a dog? Well, I can be conciliatory.
“Once in a while, I think it would be nice to have another one. The kids want one.... READ MORE
If You Knew What I Know ...

You know how it is.
Your kid wants to tell you all about something. You know it must have been great and you do want to hear it. Later. When you’re done here. You’ve just got to finish this one thing. Then you’ll sit down and she can tell you all about it.
You keep your word. But you find something to keep your hands busy - laundry folding maybe - so that you don’t waste time while she tells you.... READ MORE
John Paul the Beloved

Even before Pope John Paul II’s death, the faithful began clamoring to name our recently departed Holy Father “John Paul the Great.”
The Great is a title only bequeathed to three popes thus far — Leo I, Gregory I, and Nicholas I. I don’t know what all goes into determining whether a pope is worthy of The Great. That is for the authorities to decide.
Yet the vox populi has spoken — shouted — Santo... READ MORE
The Pains of Pride

“Right when I’m done with my story this guy goes, ‘That ain’t nothin’!’ … Oh ... well ... didn’t mean to waste everybody’s time telling my nothin’ story. Here—let Marco Polo speak!”—Brian Regan
One-ups and put-downs are hilarious—when you’re Brian Regan. Even then, I bet even that talented comedian wasn’t laughing when it happened.
Who would? It’s a full-face slap to your pride. I don’t know about... READ MORE
Putting the "Fun" in Dysfunctional
Summer 2010 Magazine Issue | Posted by Susie Lloyd in Features on Thursday, June 17, 2010
An invitation to a family reunion sometimes provokes the opposite reaction from the one intended. Instead of “Eat, drink, and be merry” you’re thinking, “Tomorrow this may kill me.”
I keenly remember how it was at my wedding 20 years ago. I was thrilled that my siblings were coming from far away with their spouses and children. My mom, however, was worried. All those road-weary people, jammed into... READ MORE

The year’s at the spring
And day’s at the morn;
Morning’s at seven;
The hillside’s dew-pearled;
The lark’s on the wing;
The snail’s on the thorn:
God’s in His heaven —
All’s right with the world!
Today was one of those idyllic days that the poet Browning wrote about. It comes back to me every year on days like these. Days when all bird-kind unites at first light to sing you awake with the Halleluiah... READ MORE
Resignation of a Tactless Cretin

We have beautiful daughters. “Of course,” you say, “YOU think so. You’re their mother.” True. But it’s a fact that has been verified by numerous friends and strangers. There is also a steady stream of boys wearing happy-to-see-you faces to convince me it’s true.
I’ll admit up front that I take some credit for this. I have helped them to be beautiful. Being a Catholic homeschooler has many advantages... READ MORE
Disaster … & What Comes After
November/December 2009 Magazine Issue | Posted by Susie Lloyd in Features on Tuesday, March 23, 2010
At Advent and Christmas, the faithful, obedient example of the Holy Family is an inspiration to all families.
Mary and Joseph trusted in God’s plan — even when they faced an unexpected pregnancy, even when they were forced to travel as the time for birth drew near, and even as it grew dark and cold and there was no room for them at the inn. Their steadfast faith did not waver, even when they were... READ MORE

Do you get the blahs? Mine come nearly every day from two to four in the afternoon.
Afternoons were always tough. A particularly embarrassing memory comes from my college days. I had fallen asleep in class. Somehow through the dreamy blur I managed to perceive my teacher standing before me with his head bent way sideways to the floor. Yup. That’s what I was doing. It’s a wonder I didn’t fall out of...
