On Being a Catholic Woman Today
Faith and Family Live! | Posted by Lisa Hendey in Faith on Thursday, April 12, 2012
In preparation for a talk I am giving this weekend with the Rockford, IL Diocesan Council of Catholic Women, I was doing a bit of research and stumbled across this wonderful video that highlights women’s contribution and Pope Benedict XVI’s March general intention:
“That the whole world may recognize the contribution of women to the development of society.”
While pausing to pray this intention regularly... READ MORE
When College Isn't the Best Option
Faith and Family Live! | Posted by Lisa Hendey in Family on Tuesday, April 10, 2012
Yesterday, we held an interesting conversation about the college options some of our children are considering. What I neglected to do was to ask you, our readers, about some of the plans your children may have that don’t involve going straight to college.
This is on my heart today, since I’ve been watching my son Adam carefully over the past few weeks and watching him begin his discernment process.... READ MORE
Considering Catholic Colleges
Faith and Family Live! | Posted by Lisa Hendey in Family on Monday, April 09, 2012
Thanks to this great article at CNS by Carol Zimmermann, I discovered a wonderful video that has been created by the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities. This discovery comes on the heels of our recent Spring Break trip to Seattle and Portland, where amidst our fun and recreation we toured two colleges with our Junior son Adam.
Honestly, our family struggles a bit with this topic. Our... READ MORE
Reflecting on this Lenten Season
Faith and Family Live! | Posted by Lisa Hendey in Faith on Thursday, April 05, 2012
I’m always amazed, the older I get, at how often I reach this point in Lent—the Triduum—and realize that my Lenten season has strayed so far from what I’d originally envisioned when I prayerfully discerned my fasting, prayer and almsgiving prior to Ash Wednesday.
For a long time, I would arrive at Holy Thursday with a sense of failure—I’d slipped, given in to my worst temptations, and never prayed... READ MORE
Infertility Webinar
Faith and Family Live! | Posted by Lisa Hendey in Health on Monday, April 02, 2012
I wanted to share the recording of the recent webinar sponsored by Ave Maria Press and presented by Angelique Ruhi-López and Carmen Santamaría, authors of the wonderful new book The Infertility Companion for Catholics.
Infertility: Spiritual Care and Practical Support for Catholic Couples from Ave Maria Press on Vimeo.
Infertility is a cross that affects one in six couples in the United States. Amid all of the emotions that come with experiencing infertility, Catholic couples face additional confusion, worry, and frustration as they explore the medical options available to them. As women who walked this road for years, authors Angelique Ruhi-López and Carmen Santamaría know firsthand the importance of having the support of the Church community. They will explore how parishes and dioceses can provide much-needed information and spiritual support to infertile couples and those who have experienced miscarriages.

Maybe you made a trip to the theater last weekend to watch a certain movie that has been generating a lot of buzz. Maybe the lead actress drew you in with her beauty and the story line kept you gripping your seat until the very end. Maybe you shed a tear and rooted against the bad guys. Maybe you can’t wait to see the film again, and are telling all of your friends that if they only go see one movie... READ MORE
Blessing of a Child in the Womb

This morning, on my Facebook feed a wonderful image caught my eye—an ultrasound scan, shared by friends announcing that they had learned the gender of their soon to be born son. With great joy, they shared his name. This will enable me to add him—by name—to my prayer list, months before he arrives on the scene. Naming him, seeing his photo, and knowing his parents’ great joy helps me to celebrate... READ MORE
The Perfect Girl Gift

With Confirmations, First Communions and Graduations approaching, it’s the season for giving. Last week, I received a query from one of our readers who asked,
“I have a daughter who will be graduating from college this year and would like to give her a special and meaningful gift that she can use throughout her life that will help her to always strive to be the woman God is calling her to be. Do... READ MORE
Non-Fish Fridays
Faith and Family Live! | Posted by Lisa Hendey in Homemaking on Thursday, March 22, 2012
Yesterday, over on CatholicMom.com I was blessed to share three amazing non-fried fish recipes to enjoy on Lenten Fridays (or any night of the week). I was conversing with my Facebook friends about how yummy they looked and swapping other recipe ideas, when one brave mom ventured to ask the following question:
“What non-fish Lent meals are staples at everyone’s house? We’re not huge fish lovers though... READ MORE

Today’s Gospel reading (John 5:1-16) made me think of my friend Matt Swaim. For 177 days and counting, Matt has been starting his online days with a #gratefultweet—a short prayer of thanksgiving for something special that has happened. Some of Matt’s #gratefultweets are profound, others a bit goofy. Regardless, he has inspired me and countless others to make our first social media interaction of the... READ MORE
