Pausing to Remember

Remembering and praying for those lost and impacted

At our Catholic school today, the children are invited to wear patriotic colors and will pause for a campus prayer ceremony in remembrance of those impacted by the tragedies on September 11, 2001.

I remember the morning of the attacks, watching the events unfold live on the television with disbelief.  I had been up early that morning working in the California predawn hours when a friend sent me the... READ MORE

The Power of Perseverance

Seeing something through to its conclusion feels great!

This morning, I celebrated the accomplishment of one of my New Year’s Resolutions for 2008!  I’m a big resolver, so back in January I wrote a series of blog posts about my resolutions for the year, including this post about my goals related to learning and professional development

For the past few years, I’ve been learning to knit.  Let me say that I’m not a crafty person, so this has been a big... READ MORE

Can Mom Call in Sick?

What happens at your home when Mom isn't feeling well?

You feel the signs coming a few days before it hits - the scratchy throat, the aching limbs, that pre-sick feeling that you just can’t shake.

But, chances are if you’re a mom you ignore the hints your body is giving you and move on, full speed ahead, ignoring the indicators that you need to slow things down and take it easy.

And then, it’s too late - you’re sick.

It happened to me this week.  I spent... READ MORE

Music Inspired by Katrina

This Catholic dad turned tragedy into art and service

This week on the Catholic Moments podcast (click here to listen) I had the chance to chat with Catholic Dad and musician Gerard Faucheux, whose music ministry was born in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Deacon Tom Fox offers a wonderful reflection on our beloved Pope John Paul II.  Share your feedback at 206-339-9272, comment here on the blog or email lisa@catholicmom.com.

Apparently, it happens to the best of us!

In Honor of Mary

Share your story to honor the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary

In honor of the upcoming Marian feast day, the editors of the wonderful Behold Your Mother blog are seeking your participation:

What are some of your favorite Marian recipes? If Mary was coming to dinner, what would you make?
What do you give a mother who has everything? What will your gift to Mary be this year?
In reflecting on “another year older,” how does the Blessed Mother serve as a guide, role model, and mentor to you?

Sanctifying Sunday

How does your family keep Sunday special?

In my recent meeting with Andy from our Diocesan Family Life Office, one of the topics he stressed to me was his concern for helping the families of our diocese to live out the precepts of the Third Commandment, reserving Sunday as a day for worship, rest and family time.

Andy’s passion on the topic got me thinking.  I came home and queried my friends at Plurk.com with the simple question, “How does... READ MORE

School Mass

Pastor gives students and parents a mission for the year ahead

Boy I’ve missed that sound… the sound of 700 plus voices, in sing songy unison, proclaiming

“Good morning, Father Rob!”

to our pastor’s opening welcome at the start of his homilies. At our opening Mass this morning, Father Rob admitted that he’d missed it too - the sound of all of those wonderful young voices, gathered together for the Eucharist.

Father Rob came to us last October, following on the... READ MORE

Today’s Watchword: ‘Abstemious’

Abstemious: sparing or moderate; characterized by abstinence, moderation: an abstemious life

Last night, Eric and I were sprawled across the living room couch studying vocabulary words for an AP English quiz today (his, not mine) when we wandered across a word that prompted an interesting discussion.

“Abstemious”

In the midst of all of the other killer A words like “abnegate” and “abjure” (can you tell we’re getting ready for the SATs?), this word popped out at my son, who will be 17 next... READ MORE

What Did You Hear?

Feel free to share your reactions

In advance of last night’s speech by Republican VP Candidate Sarah Palin, no fewer than three people emailed me the following quote:

When asked by the McCain campaign if she would be able to withstand the liberal media onslaught on her and her family, Gov. Palin’s response was:

Do you know the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull?

        ...Lipstick.

Did you have a chance to view Sarah Palin’s speech at the convention last night?  If so, what was your reaction?  I’ll admit to not hearing the entire speech live - I’ve read the text and viewed video segments of it, but I was busy doing what most moms do at that time of night: driving home from an activity, doing laundry, overseeing homework, and trying to get kids to bed.  So I’d love to hear what you thought about “the speech”!
