About Hallie Lord

Hallie Lord Hallie Lord married her dashing husband, Dan, in the fall of 2001 (the same year, coincidentally, that she joyfully converted to the Catholic faith). They now happily reside in the deep South with their two energetic boys and two very sassy girls. In her *ample* spare time, Hallie enjoys cheap wine, strong coffee, long runs, fresh flowers, vintage fashion, dark chocolate, Ella Fitzgerald and overpriced candles. She also blogs from time to time about Marriage, Moxie and Modesty with a Vintage Twist at BettyBeguiles.com.

Mad for Mad Men Style

Fashion Friday vol. 13

Hello girls!

Are any of you fans of the AMC show Mad Men? Though I’m not a devotee myself, my eyes light up every time I spot pictures from the series somewhere. What I wouldn’t give to get my hands on some of those outfits!

Imagine my delight upon learning that the costume designers for Mad Men have a blog on the AMC website called Fashion File! Let’s just say that things temporarily felt a little... READ MORE

Different Shades of Modesty

Fashion Friday vol. 12

One of the things I find most interesting about the subject of modesty is the wide variety of ways in which individuals interpret it.

Unlike some aspects of our faith, God hasn’t given us a strict or specific list of rules to apply to our wardrobe, which leaves a lot up to personal discretion.

It’s been such a pleasure for me over these last few months to hear your modesty-related thoughts and opinions.... READ MORE

Beauty on Budget

What are your favorite products?

One of my most cherished memories from my adolescence is the seasonal trip to the Clinique counter that my mother and I would make together.

I don’t remember why Clinique became our cosmetic company of choice, though I continue to be happy with their products to this day. I imagine my Mom had identified it as her favorite at some point and so naturally I adopted it as my own, as well.

My mother always... READ MORE

Bella Bands and Babies

Fashion Friday vol. 10

Hello ladies! I’ve missed y’all!

Danielle was kind enough to offer me a bit of time off as I adjusted to some new circumstances in my life. Well, just one new circumstance, actually ...

A beautiful, tiny new circumstance who should be making his or her arrival late this coming summer.

We are all overjoyed, but this Mama’s been suffering from that yucky 1st trimester tummy that I know most of you... READ MORE

What Can We Give?

Fashion Friday vol. 9

I must admit, I haven’t felt much like dreaming about fashion while so many are hurting in Haiti.

Even though I know there are suffering people at all times all over the world, for some reason this latest tragedy has hit me particularly hard. All I’ve been able to think about is how much I want to help the people of Haiti and how sad I am that I have so little to give.

Yesterday, while praying for... READ MORE

Skirting the Issue

Fashion Friday vol. 8

UPDATE: The number of comments on this post has made it difficult to follow the discussion and reply to specific comments. I am closing comments here, but please feel free to continue the discussion of this topic in this new post.

Ladies, I’m very, very cold.

Yesterday morning it was 18° outside. This morning was an only slightly more bearable 24°.

I know. You heroic pioneer women up north are laughing... READ MORE

Better Beauty Through Books

Fashion Friday vol. 7

Hiya chickadees!

Can you believe we’re a mere week away from Christmas? I still have so much left to do! I’m not complaining, though. I promise. There’s something about the rushing around that is part and parcel of this upcoming week that fills me with giddy anticipation.

This week I’m sharing three of my favorite fashion/charm themed books for benefit of those of you who, like me, are still working... READ MORE

In Over My Head

Fashion Friday vol. 6

Hiya girls!

I hope you won’t mind if I tie my second Fashion Friday stocking stuffer suggestion into the slightly more weighty topic of covering one’s head at Mass. Veiling is an issue that’s intrigued me for a long time and I’m eager to hear your experiences with and opinions on the subject.

Over time I’ve learned that if there’s an issue I can’t seem to get off my mind it usually means God is trying... READ MORE

Festive Socks Are a Sweet Treat

Fashion Friday (Monday) vol. 5

(Editor’s Note: Despite being sick with strep throat, Hallie wrote this blog post in plenty of time for Friday, but I neglected to post it. I apologize for my oversight and hope you will forgive me as you enjoy this Monday version of Hallie’s popular Fashion Friday column.—DB)

Hello, girls! Happy Advent! Can you believe Christmas is a mere 18 days away? My head is spinning! I’m trying my best to find... READ MORE

Hemlines and Happiness

Fashion Friday vol. 4

Every so often I stumble upon an item of clothing that I am so delighted by that I want to own it in every color and pattern available to me. Not that I actually get to indulge that desire, of course, but you know you’ve unearthed a treasure when you get that itch.

I feel that way every time I stop by Vintage Hem, a company that has resurrected the classic petticoat to bless the modern modest woman.... READ MORE
