Why I Stay Home

At-home parenting is an 'opportunity of a lifetime'

“Why?”

My old newspaper colleague sat across from me in the diner booth. Irritated, he asked me again, “Why?” with a quizzical smile.

The smile was there so I wouldn’t be offended. The quizzical was there because he was.

The three year old sat next to me and the baby was banging on the tray of the high chair because I was a little slow with the eggs. Business meetings with babies are always an odd... READ MORE

Do The Rules Still Apply?

And does anyone care?

My neighbor’s father walked outside while my brothers and I played wiffle ball with his son.

Sometimes, on Sunday afternoons he’d come out with a beer in his hand, sit on the grass with a comic grunt, and announce our games in epic terms while impersonating the radio voices we all knew.

That day, he told us that two “hippies” ran out on centerfield in Dodger’s Stadium attempting to burn the American... READ MORE

Wake Up, Dad!

when baby games go wrong

Here’s how I wake up every morning. My wife lays the one year old on the bed next to me. The baby gently places her hands on my chest, leans in towards my closed eyes and blares, “Wake up Dad!!!!!!!!!!!!”

Now to be honest it sounds more like “EggapDaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!” But she gets the point across with window rattling volume.

My wife thinks it’s very funny. I consider it alternately cute and sadistic... READ MORE

The Longest Nine Seconds of My Life

what I learned on report card day

I lost her. For about nine seconds I couldn’t find my six year old daughter. I say nine seconds because I know it couldn’t have been the eternity it felt like.

You see, the three girls received excellent report cards. Well, my seven year old got one “S” instead of a “G” and I lectured her about effort and perseverance and the importance of G’s because that’s what crazy fathers do.

At the end of my... READ MORE
