Mary to the Poor and Simple
At Lourdes, France, Mary appeared to a fourteen-year-old who wasn’t very bright and wasn’t very big. Marie Bernadette Soubirous, called by the diminutive of her name because she was so tiny, was the oldest of six, born to a poor miller. She was weak and sickly as a child, suffering from asthma.
When her parents sent... READ MORE
Turning to Mary for Comfort

(The Feast of Our Lady of Tears is January 24)
Mary comes to me, so often, just as I need her. Sometimes she offers me peace in the midst of my crisis of the moment, from sudden deaths in the family to terrifying trips to Children’s Hospital. At other times, she’s the smile I find among the “prizes” in my laundry basket (including rocks, dripping sippy cups, and dog toys) and the strength to just... READ MORE

Mary, In a Pinch

(The feast of Our Lady of Prompt Succor is January 8)
God’s timeline is different from mine. While I’m busy praying every prayer I can find, He’s at work. The problem is that I don’t always see results as soon as I’d like.
The silence that greets me when I remind God that I’m interested in knowing what’s going on doesn’t annoy me quite as much as it used to. In an age of instant communication, maybe... READ MORE
Mama Mary Comes to Me
Features | Posted by Sarah Reinhard in Faith on Thursday, December 31, 2009
On January 1, one week from Christmas, we celebrate a feast that’s not only a holy day of obligation—Mary, the Mother of God—but also the World Day for Peace and the first day of the New Year.
In the midst of resolutions and late-night parties, we gather in churches around the world. We ring in the New Year, every year, with the Eucharist, the highest salute we can give Mary in her most role as Mother... READ MORE
Juan's Mom

It was a cold day in December when she came to an unlikely fellow. She had a retinue of songbirds and flowers, but I think that’s because she can’t help it. Just as my daughters can’t resist adding a tiara or sparkly shoes to their everyday outfits, so it is with Mary.
Maybe it’s because she was once a little girl, not so different from the ones who decorate my refrigerator with pictures of rainbows... READ MORE
Waiting and Preparation

If you’re like me, you probably find yourself, so often, at the beginning of Advent with a glassy stare and a list that’s longer than Santa’s.
You’ll have shopping to do, baking to finish, wrapping and cleaning and a host of other things, all demanding your attention. And I haven’t even taken into account the day-to-day items that aren’t pausing in the midst of all the extras.
For the last few years,... READ MORE
Mercy Me

I’ve always been a sucker for quotes. I keep a document on my computer and have only recently weaned myself of the scraps of paper that used to hold meaningful quotes near my desk, on my refrigerator, and in my office.
Maybe it’s because I’m an avid reader and always have been. Maybe it’s because of the power of words to move me, change me, affect me. Maybe it’s just a manifestation of my inner... READ MORE
Holding Mary's Hand
Features | Posted by Sarah Reinhard in Faith on Wednesday, October 07, 2009
I can’t count how many times in a day that I feel a hand in mine. Often, it’s the hand of a young child, a daughter or a niece or a small visitor. They reach up, with complete trust, and let their hand be covered by mine. There’s never a hesitation. They never look to make sure that I’m going to accept their hand. There’s never a moment of regret…for either of us.

The Weeping Statue
Features | Posted by Sarah Reinhard in Faith on Tuesday, September 15, 2009
It seems far-fetched, hard to believe, even imaginary.
The story of the weeping Madonna of Akita interests the storyteller in me, both the girl who used to curl up with a good novel and the mom who spins a yarn on a long car ride.

At age 19, Agnes Sasagawa was paralyzed after a botched appendix operation. She spent sixteen years immobile, sent to many different hospitals and clinics... READ MORE
