I can’t wait to start this!
40 Bags in 40 Days

I was intrigued by the 40 Trash Bags in 40 Days Lenten challenge that made the rounds of Catholic mom blogs during Lent last year.
It’s a pretty simple concept: Just commit to ridding your home of 40 bags of “stuff” during the 40 days of Lent.
You can throw it away or give it away—garbage, clothing, toys, books, etc. You can pick the size of bag that makes the most sense for your circumstances—large garbage bags if you have a lot of clutter, smaller bags if you have less.
I don’t think the rules need to be hard and fast. Basically, the idea is to commit to 40 days of possibly uncomfortable “letting go.” A great way to observe Lent! (And no fair—Rachel’s got a head start on all of us!)
I’m in. Who else is?
If you’re ready to commit to the 40 Bags in 40 Days challenge, add your name here in the comments. I’ll post once a week during Lent and we can all report our progress and hold one another accountable.
Come on, you can do this!

You have no idea how much this challenge is calling me this month! I look forward to doing it, and I will definitely need the other ladies to keep me accountable! (I am embarrassed by the amount of “when I lose weight I can wear that size 0 ________” I have….)
Count me in! Hopefully this will give me the motivation I need to de-clutter our home & make it a more peaceful place.
I’m in…. but can you post a reminder of some sort… like on FB or here or something? I tend to overdo it in Lent with giving up/taking up stuff. I am trying to just focus on a few things, but this idea is great and I don’t want to let it go by the wayside come day 9 or something.
Love the idea! Not sure if this is a sacrifice for me or a treat! I am always getting rid of stuff…but 40 bags in 40 days….that sounds like a good challenge even for me!
I’m in! I second the need for a reminder - I am so easily distracted.
Brilliant! I’m going to share this idea with everyone I know. I’ve been doing something similiar for a few years now and it gives me a greater appreciation for what is really important and necesary in my family’s lives. This year I’m getting the kids more involved. Good luck everyone!
I will definitely participate! I have been decluttering a lot in the last few weeks but a bag a day will help me with my goal of “Holy Detachment.” I love this term coined by Abby Sasscer in her e-book, “Simplify Your Domestic Church: A Spiritual Journal To Help Declutter, Organize, and Systemize the Home.” For more information go to http://www.projectnazareth.info. I believe the e-book can be purchased at http://www.chcweb.com.
Wow! The FlyLady challenge of February is to declutter for 15 minutes every day. I have been reading her reminders & thinking what a nice idea that is, but just not taking the plunge. I’m also a HUGE packrat, so this will be really really hard, but something that I’ve been wanting to do for a long time. Now, if only I can convince my packrat daughter to do it with me…
What a great idea!! I have been struggling with having too much stuff. My stuff, my kids stuff, and since my parents have both past away now, their stuff too. This would make my husband sooo happy because, he really has no stuff! He often makes of me when the show “Hoarders” come on. In the past I given up pop for Lent, but this year it was my New Years Resolution. Especially after seeing the the Sisters on Oprah and how free they were from “stuff”, I am up going to do this!
I’ll join!!!! I would love to do this. Will there also be the daily Lenten Meditations this year (prayer, fast, give?) I loved those!!!
I’m in, and actually my whole Bible study group wanted in when I told them about it a few weeks ago! We were on a lesson that included detaching from material objects, and I wrote about it here. I actually have over 30 “bags” of varying sizes already collected . . . wonder how many I’ll actually get? I look forward to cheering everybody else on!
