A Boat, A Lake, A Pole

“Make sure you’re ready for pictures,” my husband warned me when we spoke yesterday as he drove home from a 5-day all-boy fishing trip to New York.
I made sure I was ready. And I got pictures.
Not only of this monster pike Ambrose caught and managed to wrestle into the boat (all by himself—yes he did!). But of the other boys and men with fish as well.
There were on the lake moments, in the truck moments, goofy times in the woods moments, and fish. Plenty of fish.
When Dan and his father first began planning this trip with our older boys months ago, I was supportive of the idea. It sounded like a wonderful opportunity for male bonding of the very best kind.
During some moments of my husband’s absence, however, the 5 days felt like an awfully long time.
The fact is, I’m spoiled. I’m used to having Dan around here most days and every night.
It was pretty quiet around here at night without him, unless you count the noise the black bears made as they tried to get into our house. The girls told me it was just the wind, but all I know is what it sounded like to me—wild black bears forcing their way into the house to maul me and kidnap the children.
And then there was the dog, who missed his master. Some of us deal with stress and separation anxiety by eating copious amounts of chocolate. Well, the dog dealt with his stress and separation anxiety by eating copious amounts of ... the blanket we keep in his kennel.
I’m sure it seemed like a good idea at the time, but it turns out the blanket-eating gave him a stomach ache. Which meant he needed to eat grass until he ... well, enough about that. This is a lady blog, after all, and if Rachel can refrain from sharing her new doggy training details, I can do the same.
All my efforts paid off last night, though, when my menfolk returned home safe, sound, and happy.
They had sunburned necks and a giant garbage bag of laundry.
And memories too. Plenty of those.
