A Happy Bargain

My husband called this afternoon and told me that he was going to come home from work early, trade his car for my bigger one, and go out and pick up a surprise.
“A surprise?” I asked, thinking quickly about what large items could be exciting for me.
But the surprise wasn’t for me, he told me. It was for Camilla.
Ah! That explained his gleeful tone - my husband loves to delight his little girl.
Camilla tried to guess what her surprise might be.
“Maybe it is a kite! For kids!” she exclaimed happily. (We had a kite last year, but it met an untimely demise.)
It could be a pen, she thought. (A pink one, of course.) Or, oh! A pretty box for putting stuff in!
My girl dreams big.
But the reality was beyond her wildest dreams: a toy kitchen!
Camilla has been coveting a toy kitchen for ages. There’s one in the waiting room of my chiropractor’s office, and every week she begs to come with me so she can play with it. We’ve been wanting to get her one, but those things are expensive.
But today my husband was eyeing a kitchen at toy store near his office, wincing at the price tag, when a lady standing near him asked him if he’d want to buy a used one. It was in good condition, and she only wanted $20 for the kitchen plus accessories - a bunch of dishes and toy food. A steal!
Even if we’d paid the (exorbitant) full price, it would have been worth it to watch my daughter literally jump for joy when she saw her new toy. Since it only cost us twenty bucks, the feeling was even better.
We’re all happy tonight. Thanks to our new-to-us toy kitchen, and thanks to the generous lady who made today a pretty great day for all of us.
