A Timely Reminder

When I checked my calendar for tomorrow, I saw it there in big bold letters: Mammogram. Surprisingly, the appointment I normally dread for weeks kind of snuck up on me this time around. It’s become a bit of a routine - since my treatment for non-invasive breast cancer almost two years ago, I get checked out on a fairly regular basis. It’s never fun, but these days it does bring me a peace of mind to know that I’m being checked regularly and that there would be ample time to act if something abnormal showed up on a scan.
I wasn’t always this vigilant, and I know that there are those of you out there who are due (or overdue!) for medical treatment and keep finding every excuse in the book not to go to the doctor.
“I’m too busy…”
“I’ll go when I lose this five pounds.”
“We can’t afford it right now.”
I know the excuses - I’ve used them. Going to the doctor is never fun, but if we’re fulfilling our vocation to marriage and parenting, we must take care of ourselves physically. So if you’re late for a dental or medical appointment date, pour yourself a cup of coffee, grab your calendar and pick up the phone. Then call a friend and tell her to do the same - we moms need to take care of ourselves, and each other!
