It may not be marked on your calendar, but if any boys live in your house you will want to commemorate today’s observance of “International Talk Like a Pirate Day”.
Observed every year on September 19, Talk Like a Pirate Day gives grown men the chance to relive their boyhood fantasies of taking to the sea in search of buried treasure. Surprisingly, a lot of moms and sisters get in the act too!
Today reminds me of how much my kids absolutely loved pirates when they were little. They’re old enough that their obsession pre-dated the Disney series and was more related to Captain Hook in the Peter Pan movie. I made Eric a Captain Hook costume for one of his early Halloweens and he wore it until the gold buttons were bursting. I never quite knew why both of my sons were so infatuated with pirates, but they definitely were!
Catholic author Tim Bete understands a lot about kids and pirates too! He is the author of Guide to Pirate Parenting, which offers such important tidbits of information as:
Top 10 traits that show your new baby has great potential to be a pirate
Top 10 things overheard at the dinner table that show your child is quickly becoming a pirate
Nursery Rhymes for Pirates
Do your kids love pirates?? If so, why not celebrate ITLP Day with a scurvy supper and some grog?
And just in case you’re wondering if your kid is a pirate, enjoy taking Tim Bete’s video quiz!
