There has been a good deal of buzz in the Catholic blogosphere in the past few weeks about Catholic iPhone apps. I thought I’d give you a little laundry list of iPhone updates and invite you to share again about new ones you’ve discovered since we last took up this topic.
* First official Vatican sponsored app - News here of the coming-soon Vatican Observatory app featuring reflections by Rev. Michael Manning and will “include biblical readings and a reflection on those verses to connect them to people’s everyday lives.”
* Kinderbuch Beta Test - The developer of this app says, “Hi! If you’re interested in signing up to beta test Kinderbuch, a new NFP Creighton Method tracking application for iPhone and iPod Touch, then please fill out the form below. If you get picked for the beta test, you will be contacted via email.” Visit here to fill out the form.
* Saint a Day - This new app from the Daughters of St. Pauline Fully offers a searchable, alphabetic listing of saint biographies, short meditations for each day and over 100 great saint prayers. The best part of all is Sr. Christine’s promise to pray along with you for your intentions! Buy this one for $1.99 and support the Daughters of St. Paul in their wonderful work!
* Stations of the Cross - Just in time for Lent, this lovely application from Ave Maria Press features the work of Amy Welborn and Michael Dubruiel and gorgeous artwork that will aid you in praying the Stations. Better yet, it’s free!
* The SaintCast - Finally, one of my favorite podcasts has its own iPhone app. Dr. Paul Camarata, the “Voice of SQPN”, has pulled together an amazing app that lets you listen to the latest episodes, view extras, call in to leave feedback and much more. The SaintCast is truly one of the most enjoyable ways to learn about the lives of the saints. $1.99 is a great investment for something you’ll also share with your entire family.
* Kids Puzzle Catholic Edition - I was hoping that this one would be a winner - a way to help our little ones learn more about the saints. But sadly, it’s not much more than a manipulative. It features beautiful holy card images and a cute toddler voice announcing the names of the saints, but no real information. I’d save my .99 and hope for a future update with more content.
So that’s this month’s roundup of Catholic apps - do you have a great one to share or one you can’t live without?

Great suggestions, just downloaded three of the four, the last 1 is “above my paygrade” and well…puzzling : )
I also HIGHLY RECOMMEND, the updated Divine Office. Excellent for those who travel or who have difficulty praying LOTH alone.
iMissal is my go-to prayer book and I also use iConfess to prepare for confession. I review the examination of conscience and then makes notes for my next confession. In fact, at my last confession the priest asked me what I was doing with my phone and I showed him the app and how I was using it. He thumbed through it himself and was very pleased. (My apologies, however, to those waiting in line behind me for taking so long!)
I downloaded iBreviary. It arrived in Italian. Any idea how i can get the english version?
To get iBreviary in English, go to the main Settings icon on your phone. Scroll down to where you see all of your apps. iBrieviary will be listed there - select it and you will see an option to change the language to English. Hope that helps!
The one I use the most is 3 Minute Retreat by Loyola Press. Every day has a new scripture reading, with meditations and prayers. It is great when you have a few minutes to spare.
Any advice for finding Catholic Blackberry apps? I’ve found one, but it gets mixed reviews and I haven’t had the opportunity to set up a paypal account to pay for it. I love my Blackberry, I just wish I could use it with some of these neat Catholic apps…can some of these just be used on a regular computer?
Have fun with those iPhones!
Jamie
No advice, but I agree. I’ve been considering switching to an iPhone because of the limited “good stuff” ...
I love all these application ideas! Thanks for sharing your favorites.
The mental image of a sea of Catholics with their heads bowed devoutly over their iphones does make me chuckle!
Me too! I have been at church and praying using my prayer book app but then worry I may scandalize someone - thinking I was texting or checking emails!
Great suggestions, everyone! I hadn’t heard about some of those yet!
Also, definitely interested in the NFP one…but the form isn’t working anymore it looks like. I did find two other NFP apps though I intend on checking out (just search NFP in the app store).
