Are you pinning?

Have you checked out Pinterest?

If you’re online much, you’ve probably heard about Pinterest, one of the hottest new social networking properties around these days. Launched in beta in March of 2010, the site is now welcoming over 11 million visits per week and seems to be all the rage among many of my geek friends—especially those of the female persuasion.

What is Pinterest all about? Here’s an overview from the site’s “About” page:

Pinterest is a Virtual Pinboard. Pinterest lets you organize and share all the beautiful things you find on the web. People use pinboards to plan their weddings, decorate their homes, and organize their favorite recipes. Best of all, you can browse pinboards created by other people. Browsing pinboards is a fun way to discover new things and get inspiration from people who share your interests.

To me, Pinterest reminds me of a big scrapbook shared between friends. I can always count on my friend Cindy to pin cute knitting projects and her sister Carey tempts me regularly with delectable baked goods. I follow a few friends who share my passion for travel, and have also discovered some great books via Pinterest.

I’ll admit to having a bit of social networking fatigue these days, so I’m not as social as I could be on Pinterest, but I’ve enjoyed visiting there for a few moments each day to oooh and ahhh over pretty pictures. I find myself pinning most frequently to my “Cool Catholic Stuff” “Saints” and “Geek Stuff” boards. Could “pinning” be used in the New Evangelization? I think the answer is “yes”. Hasn’t art and architecture been used over the years to give glory to God and to tell the stories of our faith?

Are you using Pinterest? If so, what do you think? If you’re there and would like to connect with me, you can find me at http://pinterest.com/lisahendey/.

Happy Pinning!

I need help with this. When I first heard about Pinterest months ago, I tried to join and they responded, thank you for your application we’ll let you know. HUH? is there another way to get on there? thanks.

I have heard that you can get “invited” by a friend already on it and that way you get in easier. So, if you know someone who does it then ask then to invite you..

I am resisting the temptation because i just don;t have time and can’t justify spending time on it. Seven children (one an infant) and homeschooling plus helping out in school, etc.  NO TIME!  Wish I did as it looks interesting.

I believe it’s like Ravelry was when it was new.  It was too popular and couldn’t handle all the traffic.  Once it was established everyone can go on at will.  I had to wait and month and a half for my Ravelry invite, but now you can get on same day.  I’m sure once the load evens out Pinterest will be the same way.
Also yes, I’m an addict.  I’m on pinterest every time I have to feed the baby. smile I pin sewing/crafty stuff, food, stuff I think the kids would like me to make them and clothes I will probably never where, but it is fun to see what I like vs what I actually wear.

I admit I am obsessed with Pinterest!f

Kathleen-This happened to me, also.  I think they “let you in” gradually.  I was able to get onto the site about 3-4 weeks after I first applied.  Hope that helps!!

I love pinterest.  I spend way too much time on it; however, the good news is it takes me away from other, less productive, online time wasters!

I asked to be invited by the site and it only took about 3 days.  Now I need to find the time to look around the site!

Found it, loved it, went to join, got invited to and then found out you had to have a facebook or twitter account to join! No fair.

I have an invitation to join from my blogger sister, but I wonder if there is a way to join with just an email address.  I am not on Facebook or Twitter.  I emailed that question to Pinterest and they did not get back to me.  Can anyone help me out?

I love Pinterest!

First- I don’t have a Twitter or FB account, but I created a Twitter account just to get on Pinterest. Then I immediately deleted the Twitter account. It worked like a charm-and really that’s just their way of making sure you are a “real” person and not a robot. smile After your account is created, you just sign in with your email address, so you don’t need Twitter or FB at that point.

Next- I love Pinterest so much I found I was pinning like crazy and not really *doing* any of the projects… so my friend Pam and I started a weekly link-up we’re calling Pinning it Down. It’s been loads of fun, and every Tuesday we get together on either my or Pam’s blog to share the projects we’ve been pinning and DOING. It’s a blast, and a lot of ladies are having fun with it. You can find out more here: http://www.amongstlovelythings.com/p/pinning-it-down.html

If you need an invite to Pinterest, you’ll find my email info at the above link- I’ll send ya one! smile

Thanks Sarah for the idea. My main reasons for not wanting twitter or facebook is the fact that with six kids there are better things i should be doing! I have done some of projects i’ve seen on Pinterest and can see how all this can be additive yet inspiring.

I’m not on Pinterest but I actually came across your “Pinning It Down” link-up one week from a blogger who had joined in. It was neat to see some of the things people were doing and I even completed one easy project myself. smile Maybe someday I’ll join; for now I still just use my browser to bookmark things I like. One nice thing about Pinterest is that you can look without joining. I have seen some neat things on there and just bookmarked the source.

I am another pinterest addict! I also put it off because I knew it would be a time sucker, but now that I’m on it I love it. I spend more time on that than on facebook and blogs combined now. I do have to make sure and take time each week to actually try to do the things I’ve pinned, instead of just dreaming about them! I was skeptical at first, but I’ve actually sewed some neat things and found some good recipes this way.

Apparently it can take a long time to get on if you don’t have an invite. (I’m not sure why they do that - maybe to make it seem cooler?) Ask your friends or just post on your facebook wall and I’m sure someone would be glad to email you one.

I adore Pinterest and try to entice all my friends to join cause I don’t want to be the only one addicted. I’ve made several things through pinterest and I’ve used it to get DIY house ideas across to my husband. I love pinning and am constantly window shopping for great ideas. You can follow me too.
