Artsy Evangelization

I’m happy tho help spread the word about a fun and faith filled contest for students in junior high and high school that will enable them to combine their love of faith with their love of the arts.
Jill Rauh, Issue Outreach and Youth and Young Adult Coordinator for the Department of Justice, Peace and Human Development at the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops shares the following about the contest:
Do you know someone in grades 7 through 12? Does he or she like to draw, paint, sing, make YouTube videos, take photos, or do anything else “artsy”? Encourage him or her to enter the Multi-Media Youth Arts Contest!
In Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, the Catholic bishops of the United States remind us that all Catholics have a role to play in making our world a better place. They write, “Even those who cannot vote have the right to have their voices heard on issues that affect their live and the common good” (# 16).
The Multi-Media Youth Arts contest is sponsored by the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD), the anti-poverty program of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). It is designed to help students learn about poverty in the U.S. and the Church’s response and then to use their artistic gifts and talents to educate their peers and communities.
Information about the contest is at: usccb.org/cchd/contestmaterials.shtml. The national contest deadline is March 31, 2009. Deadlines may vary by diocese. For more information, contact your CCHD diocesan director or email the national office.
This seems like the perfect way to allow our teens to harness some of their creative talent and address issues that are truly important to them and to our world. Society often sells our kids short when it comes to caring about things that don’t involve popular culture or their friends - but the truth is they are filled with compassionate and caring hearts. I think my sons could have a great time pulling something together for this contest. Also sounds like a great project for homeschoolers, religion classes or youth groups!
