A Summer Tease

Temperatures here yesterday reached the high 80’s.
We were impressed. Late April just doesn’t do that here in New Hampshire.
The weather man said the heat wouldn’t last, so we decided to make the most of it with our first lake trip of the season.
Where it all came rushing back to me.
The head counts: I count to eight ... I count to eight ... I count to eight ... I count to seven. I panic, spin in circles, and gasp, “Where’s your brother?” until I lay eyes on him again. Then I count to eight, I count to eight ...
The terror toddler: He runs, he jumps, he climbs way higher than he should. All while glancing back at his chasing mother and laughing at her ineptitude.
The sand: Where have you been, my old friend? The gritty stuff worked its way into diapers, shoes, hair, the van, and the terror toddler’s ears.
The quiet: There’s a peaceful kind of quiet at the lake that you just can’t find anywhere else. The sun warmed my shoulders, the wind swallowed up my children’s laughing shouts, and wild splashing filled my ears.
The blessing: We had nowhere else to be and nothing else to do. There is no feeling in the world quite like leaving schoolbooks and housework behind and enjoying a summery afternoon with eight of your favorite people.
“Is this the lake?” Daniel paused to ask me yesterday as he sat digging in the sand.
“Yes.”
“Oh,” he said, “I like the lake.”
Me too sweetie. Me too.
