Bearing Witness

Earlier this morning, I was going about my usual Saturday morning routines when I heard the dog suddenly go crazy with barking in the driveway. We live in a pretty secluded spot and don’t get many unexpected visitors here, so the sight of a large white SUV heading down the long gravel driveway got him pretty worked up.
By the time the car parked and three well-dressed gentlemen made their way up the walkway, I was standing on my front deck, surrounded by a growing throng of children, and holding back my barking dog.
“Good morning!” they called out cheerfully. By this point I had no doubt that these well dressed gentlemen were Jehova’s Witnesses.
“We’re making some visits today,” one of them told me above the sound of the dog barking, “and we’d like to give you some more information about the Bible.”
He held out a copy of Awake! but I didn’t take it.
“Oh, we won’t need that,” I said politely. “We’re Catholic.”
He nodded knowingly and smiled. Only a few minutes later, the three of them headed back toward their car.
As I ushered the kids and dog back into the house I thought to myself, “Did I seriously just tell that man that we don’t need information about the Bible because we’re Catholic?”
What kind of witness is that? I’m sure they talked about how sad that is all the way to their next stop.
But what should I have said? Dan has gotten involved in discussions with Jehova’s Witnesses in the past, and I don’t think any of it ever bore much fruit, except they came to visit more often.
Am I meant to be a Saturday morning mom of many and an impromptu apologist to boot? What do you think? Do you engage door-to-door evangelists?
