Big Kid Birthdays

As I type this, I hear the dull roar of teenagers permeating the corners of my house. Sunday is Adam’s birthday and we’re headed out of town for the weekend to a concert in LA. So tonight (Friday), he’s got a houseful of friends over for a small celebration. I’m reminded that at this age, teens love pizza, soda, chocolate chip cookies, and space. The space part is the hard part - finding a way to let them have the room to spread out, be loud and enjoy one another’s company while keeping a very close eye on things.
The happy truth around here is that my sons have wonderful friends, so it’s a joy to have them in my home. The fact that they attend a music charter high school means that along with the strains of “Guitar Hero”, we’re likely to hear classical music played on our piano and a tune is likely to bust out at any moment. I love having these kids in my home!
We’ve tended to be very low key on “big kid” birthdays - a home baked cake, a few friends, and a present or two. No catering, no “sweet sixteen” car keys, and no DJ. Both of my sons have been invited to a fair number of parties that featured these three, but graciously they understand that that’s not our style.
I’m wondering how you celebrate teenage birthdays around your home. For those who have teenagers, have you noted that birthday parties become less of a big deal than the elementary school parties? Or are you still throwing big bashes with lots of buddies? If you have had sweet sixteen success stories, I’d love to hear about them!
And now, it’s time to go check those kids again!
