Birthday Baking is the Best

Happy Birthday #10 Sweet Juliette!

Hard to believe that ten years ago today, I spent the morning doing my very best not to curse at a well-intentioned nurse who continually offered me a “birthing ball.”

No thank you, Ma’am ... No, really, I don’t want it ... Please, no ... NO BALL! GO AWAY!  NO BALL!

It got pretty ugly.

But birthing ball or no birthing ball, the end result of that labor of love was well worth every bit it cost me.

I’ll never forget sweet Juliette’s tiny pretty face that peeked out from the pink blankets when they handed her to me. I knew right away that this second daughter would be another girl after my own heart. And has she ever been. Especially in the kitchen.

Juliette loves to bake. And lucky, lucky girl, she has a thoughtful Godmother who knows her well and never fails to remember her birthday.

Juliette was thrilled to receive a copy of the Williams Sonoma Kids Baking book this weekend. Within minutes of opening the package, she was baking buttermilk biscuits. I am not kidding.

And then yesterday afternoon, she whipped up a double batch of the peanut butter kiss cookies you see her with here.

Williams Sonoma Kids Baking is spiral bound (so it lays flat on the counter—woo hoo!) with spill resistant pages. It’s loaded with gorgeous, detailed photos of each recipe, and the recipes are perfect for kids (and moms!) of all ages. They are presented simply enough for kids to follow, but they are real baking. The recipes include yeast breads and rolled doughs—pies, cakes, cookies, and quick breads too.

If there’s a budding baker in your house, you can’t go wrong with this basic baking primer. I know mine loves it.

Happy Tenth Birthday, sweet baker-daughter of mine!
