Bishop's Show and Tell

This week, I had the tremendous good fortune to take part in a “Clergy Communications Workshop” for the priests of my home diocese. Our goal as a presenting team was to provide tools for our priests, to equip them in their response to this year’s World Communications Day Message issued in January by our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI.
This photo shows one of my favorite moments of the day - I invited our Bishop to come forward and do a presentation on the merits of his Smartphone. He spent ten minutes playing techy “show and tell”, wowing our priests with the many Catholic applications on his iPhone. His genuine enthusiasm for using technology to help spread the Word to God’s people was genuinely infectious!
In our Diocese, these three hours together are just a start down the path of truly implementing “New Media at the Service of the Word”. I invited our priests to go back to their home parishes and find geeks like me who would be enthused about helping them embrace tools like social networking, blogging and podcasting to build community and creatively enhance faith formation efforts. I hope this will be the first of many conversations we’ll be having locally.
How about your priest or diocese? Would you call your parish “high tech”, or do communications begin and end with the Sunday bulletin? Have you thought about reaching out to offer your help to your pastor or local parish staff? Is your parish a “success story” when it comes to using “New Media at the Service of the Word”?
