Blessed by Modern Media

I followed with interest the discussion on Danielle’s recent post about the uses of online social networking tools.
My own general take on the topic is in the comments section there (comment #12). I feel that modern media give us both an opportunity and a responsibility to use them - within our own vocations, of course - as best we can to spread the light of Christ.
But I’ve recently had an opportunity to be blessed by online media in a way I wouldn’t have expected, and I want to share that here to give another perspective on the whole topic.
Two weeks ago our newborn son Blaise was hospitalized with RSV, a viral respiratory infection that is not generally dangerous in full-term healthy infants like Blaise, but which can have a fairly long recovery time. We ended up being in the hospital for ten nights.
When we took Blaise to the emergency room at 5:30am, we called our immediate families to let them know what was going on, and to ask them to pray. There were a lot of other people I would have liked to call, but there was too much to do with getting admitted and taking care of the baby.
So I updated Twitter. And during our stay in the hospital I kept using Twitter, and I posted on my blog and here at Faith & Family Live, and I posted prayer requests on Facebook as well.
Because of the Internet, a LOT of people prayed for our baby who would otherwise have never known what was going on.
Furthermore, every single day we were in the hospital I got messages and emails in response to my posts, offering love and support. Knowing that there were so many people out there who cared got me through a number of teary moments.
Without the online community, we would have had a lot less prayer and support during the time little Blaise was sick. Without the newer means of online communication - especially Twitter - we would have had a much harder time keeping everyone updated on his progress. I never would have expected the new media to bless me in this way, but there you have it. God can use anything for good.
