Calling All Catechists!

The new school year that for most of us begins either this week or next week is the herald of the shortly to begin Religious Education Year as well. If you are a catechist, you are probably gearing up for that event.

Whether you are a battle scarred veteran or an excited first-timer, it’s always nice to have a new source of inspiration and practical tips. Here are two, both by veteran catechist Lisa Mladinich of Amazing Catechists.

Be An Amazing Catechist: Inspire the Faith of Children, and the new volume, Be an Amazing Catechist—Sacramental Preparation are invaluable go-to guides that will work with any faith formation program.

Each is a 31-page, magazine-sized booklet. Since the Sacramental prep book is hot off the press, that’s the one I really want to talk about today. It begins with a quick summary of sacramental theology for you, the adult, drawing on the Catechism. Then there’s two pages describing the catechist’s vocation, so beautifully written I felt sorry that I was not teaching religious ed. this year:

“Answering the call to be a catechist ... opens your life to a powerful outpouring of grace. We are not just deciding to embark on this journey with our students, but entering in union with Christ Himself.”

What follows are ideas for lesson planning, integrating the example of the saints into lessons, teaching attitudes of reverence, using sacramentals, and developing Catholic identity in teens, and communicating with parents.  Naturally there are also sections devoted specifically to first confession, First Holy Communion, and Confirmation. What you get on every page are both wise general principles as well as practical, hands-on ideas for explaining challenging concepts to kids. Above all, Lisa conveys to the catechist that her job isn’t just one more parish volunteer gig. It’s a calling, and unlike helping at bingo or waiting tables at the fish fry, requires prayer and willingness to let Jesus transform your heart as you share in His work of evangelization.

Each of the Amazing Catechist booklets is available for $2.95 from Our Sunday Visitor with discounts for bulk orders. Spanish editions are available as well.

An outstanding review of an exceptional resource. I love this book!

I am definitely going to get these! I have been a catechist for the past two years, first in pre-K, then moving up to 3rd&4th; grade last year.  This year, my husband and I are both teaching the First Communion class.  I feel a greater weight of responsibility this year because of the kids making their sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Communion. I am excited though as well because my second grade son will be in our class and I am so honored to be able to really walk through this journey with him.  Next year, if we are asked again, our two current first graders will be with us.

Long story short - I need some inspiration and some encouragement.  Thanks for the recommendation and the review!
