Calling Grace Kelly
Posted by AGroup in Just me on Friday, March 04, 2011 12:00 PM
More than once I’ve been asked if I have any tips for making shopping for clothes easier. Yesterday it dawned on me that there is one very helpful thing I do that saves me time, energy and money:
I have a style icon. Her name is Grace Kelly and I absolutely adore her look.
Why is having a style icon helpful? Ultimately, it helps me stay focused. When I go shopping, I always have Grace Kelly in mind. I don’t carry pictures of her in my back pocket, of course, but I am always looking out for pieces I can envision her wearing. It’s instinctive at this point.
Fashion trends are fickle. Unless you have a plethora of resources at your disposal to devote to evolving with the changing fashion seasons, it can be hard to build a wardrobe comprised of complementary pieces. My budget is tight. I simply can’t afford to invest in a bunch of mismatching items of clothes.
It might seem like having a fashion icon would stifle creativity and personal expression, but that hasn’t been my experience. Some of my pieces are modernized versions of Kelly’s look; others are edgier, bolder or an amalgamation of a couple of different styles including hers. But by keeping her look in mind, I’ve managed to create a wardrobe in which almost everything can be paired with several other things.
It’s practical in other ways, too. By bringing Grace shopping with me, I can quickly zone in on the pieces I love, saving me time and energy; if I identify a top that I like—one I can see my style icon wearing—I know that in all likelihood I already have a skirt or a pair of pants at home to match which saves me money; and it helps me identify stores that cater to my look so that—even if the store is expensive—I can keep a close eye on their sales rack allowing me to buy higher quality pieces that will last!
Do you have a style icon? Who is it? What do you like about their style and how do you incorporate their trademark look into your wardrobe?
