Casual Fridays - Overcoming Nerves

This week, I’ve had occasion to make some new and important acquaintances that could have a very positive impact upon the work I’m doing. Today, after one such meeting, it occurred to me that I’m in better control of my nerves and my stress level than I’ve been in the past. But the truth is, I can still use some help in this arena.
Frankly, I love meeting and interacting with new friends and contacts. I’m especially thrilled about it when I feel that I can be of some help to the person I’m meeting, or when we share something in common (like our faith!). I’ve also developed a few tricks for helping to calm myself when my nerves are getting the better of me. These include prayer, a reminder about the mutually beneficial potential of such meetings, and reminding myself that 99% of the new people I meet turn into new friends.
Reading this post about networking reminded me of some important points about being a successful networker. One of the authors tips is to “serve others” - while I don’t completely agree with the refinement of that point, those two words “Serve Others” are a key to me. If I look at these meetings less with an eye towards what I will gain and more conscious of how I might be of service to others, my self confidence gets a boost.
Whether you work full time, part time, or in the home, it’s likely that you find yourself in networking situations quite frequently. How do you handle these encounters? What helps you to keep your nerves in check?
