Casual Fridays - Your Small Business

The other day, my cell phone rang while I was sitting at my desk working on some writing. On the other end of the line was one of my favorite authors, a first-timer like me who has been a great inspiration in my life.
After a few minutes of small talk, she divulged the real reason for her call: TAXES! She and I had shared a limited conversation in the past about expenses related to business travel. Our short chat made her think—for some crazy reason—that I am knowledgeable in the area of small business budgets and taxes.
The reality - she couldn’t have been more wrong! My “work” has slowly evolved into something that makes a bit of income for our family, but I have never been financially savvy. As a result, I do my very best to track my income and expenses. But my system has been very lax, and I’ve sworn that this year I’m going to get a bit more serious about being organized in my budgeting.
So I come to our small business women here for advice - if you’ve got a hobby that earns you income, if you sell through eBay or Etsy, if you write or speak as a freelancer, or if you have a home-based business, I’m seeking your input. If you work full time and have a salary to track and invest I’d love to hear from you too! How do you handle your finances? Do you do your own taxes or consult a professional? What tips can you share for getting more organized and being more proactive so that I can be a better steward of our family’s finances?
