iLent

Take up the challenge!

I’m still trying to find the “Brothers in Black” who are the creative geniuses behind this video—but this one is too awesome not to share. I’m gong for a high score this Lent—how about you?

Beyond Chocolate

in case you still need penance advice

If you’re still in the market for some Lenten resolutions, either because you’re getting a late start or like to add on as you go,

Ironic Catholic has some unusual suggestions.

(I like her list from last year, too).

More seriously, but still humorously, click here for your lenten penance flow chart.

And Elizabeth Foss likes Lent.

How Welcoming Is Your Parish?

Hospitable or not?

This past weekend, I learned a lesson in hospitality when our family took a quick trip to the beautiful island of Oahu in Hawaii for a medical conference.

Those of you who have been fortunate enough to go to Hawaii in the past will likely agree with me that from the moment you step off the airplane, you are immediately welcomed with open arms. Many lucky visitors are greeted with floral leis, but... READ MORE

The Meaning of Ashes

the pope's homily for Ash Wednesday

Benedict the XVI is a wonderful teacher and I love it when he preaches on the significance of the symbols of the liturgy.

He did that this morning in his homily for Ash Wednesday.

He starts with the basics: the significance of ashes for the people of Israel, and then their role in our liturgy.

The ashes are not a sacramental sign, but they are linked with prayer and the sanctification of the Christian... READ MORE

Lent with Teens

Making the season special for the entire family

Last week’s conversation about faith and teens provided so much great fodder for conversation that I thought we’d use it as a jumping off point as we prepare to enter the season of Lent tomorrow. Clearly from your responses on that post, this is a topic that hits home for many of our families.

As I have been praying about my own personal Lenten devotions, I have also been raising the topic within... READ MORE

Curveballs Come

when life won't let up

2011 was a rough year for our family. Blessed, incredibly so, but rough. Baby twins are not for the faint of heart, and much of the year was a blur for me.

When 2012 began, my husband and I breathed a sigh of relief, because this was going to be our year. This year life would be simple and predictable - and easier as the twins got older - and we’d be able to relax and enjoy our little family.

Except... READ MORE

Present at a Martyrdom

...from today's liturgy
Women for Faith and Family

Today’s Liturgy of the Hours includes this eyewitness account of the martyrdom of St. Paul Miki and companions, which took place in 1597

The crosses were set in place. Father Pasio and Father Rodriguez took turns encouraging the victims. Their steadfast behavior was wonderful to see. The Father Bursar stood motionless, his eyes turned heavenward. Brother Martin gave thanks to God’s goodness by singing... READ MORE

Listen to Robyn Lee!

With Pat Gohn!

I was thrilled when I heard that my good friend, colleague, and Faith & Family blogger, the rockin’ Robyn Lee was a recent guest on the awesome Pat Gohn’s awesomely amazing podcast, Among Women.

Did that sentence sound enthusiastic enough? Because I really do love these two women and I really got a lot out of their conversation as well.

Since the Faith & Family podcast is on a bit of a hiatus while Lisa Hendey is busy globe-trotting, I thought I should highlight this little gem for our podcast-hungry readers.

Take some time to enjoy this thoughtful conversation (also on iTunes—episode 122). I was so impressed with what these two women shared about encountering Christ in everyday living. I promise you will come away blessed for having listened!

On Becoming a Pilgrim

The prayer adventure of a lifetime...

Hi friends, just a few quick words from the Holy Land where I am having the time of my life. Our internet connection here in Jerusalem is sketchy at best—to use my iPad I must do some gymnastics that are inconvenient at best… so I will keep this short and share the bulk of my stories over the next few weeks when I return home to the land of abundant and free wifi.

Although I have been able share so... READ MORE

Anything but Ordinary

A grace-filled time of the year

Recently, I was chatting with a friend who told me that she was headed home to take down her Christmas tree. She hated doing it, she shared. I congratulated her on truly understanding and appreciating our liturgical calendar, chiding myself for the fact that my tree was down and put away shortly after New Years.

But the truth of the matter is this: the older I get, the more I find myself appreciating... READ MORE
