Congratulations to editor Jennifer Gladen and all of the authors and illustrators involved in the release of the debut issue of My Light Magazine, an online magazine for Catholic children. The magazine is available online free of charge and features poetry, non-fiction articles and fun short stories. In this month’s issue you can even find easy instructions for making your own Rosary. The magazine looks to be another great resource to help our kids learn more about our faith while having fun and exploring! Homeschooling mom and noted author Maureen Wittmann shared with me the exciting news that this week she is launching a great new blog aimed at helping the wonderful teens in our lives. The blog, entitled “No Question Left Behind: Teens Helping Teens” is a question and answer format that helps teens find answers to questions about themselves, their friends, the world and our church. It looks to be... READ MORE
Loaves and Fishes

Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass; and taking the five loaves and the two fish he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and broke and gave the loaves to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over.
—Matthew 14: 19-20

Taking a Mini Pilgrimage

Whenever I travel, I love to visit local area churches, cathedrals and shrines. My parents passed along this gift to their five children - many of our family vacations growing up were camping trips to the various California missions. So now, when I travel, I always make time for at least one new church experience. Instead of collecting postcards or magnets, I have a collection of photos of Mary... READ MORE
Contracepted Priesthood

Can you bear one more post observing the 40th anniversary of Humanae Vitae? Cardinal James Stafford of the Apostolic Penitentiary here provides the most fascinating article I’ve ever read about that prophetic encyclical and its rocky reception. I don’t recall ever having read before the firsthand account of a priest who remained faithful while living through that tense period within the Church. Readers... READ MORE

40 Years of Humanae Vitae
Posted by Danielle Bean in Faith on Wednesday, July 30, 2008 6:18 PM
If your pastor didn’t preach on the 40th anniversary of Humanae Vitae in quite the way you hoped he would, you can “borrow” the homily of Fr. Richard Simon of the Archdiocese of Chicago—a grace-filled 35 minutes to be sure!
If you don’t have an iPod, 35 minutes might be a long time to sit and listen to audio on your computer, but it looks like a written version is forthcoming. Also, you can scroll down on this page to get the homily broken up into fourths on YouTube videos.
God bless Fr. Simon and all priests who courageously speak the Truth, in spite of social pressure to do otherwise!
The Witness of Infertility

My husband and I attend a parish that is charismatic, orthodox, and vibrant. It is also full of big families. This is a wonderful thing, but during the 30 cycles during which Bryan and I waited for Camilla’s conception, it was also a hard thing for me. At Mass on Sunday I would look at the parents tending to their young ones and think: what a lovely witness! The contraceptive mentality is entrenched... READ MORE
Pilgrims’ Prayers

We spent the day yesterday at Goose Rocks Beach in Maine. I’ve got the sunburned neck, sand-filled van, and exhausted children to prove it. It was a tiring day, but as always, making the effort to get our gang to the ocean proved worthwhile.
On the way home, Dan and I decided to drive through Kennebunk in order to take the kids to the St. Anthony Franciscan Monastery that we used to visit back when... READ MORE

This morning, I received an email from a wonderful woman who is seeking to help a special girl in her life. The young girl in question is a recent First Communicant who is experiencing some spiritual difficulty. Along with advising her to seek counseling from both her pastor and her pediatrician, I would like to recommend some age appropriate books for this little girl. So I am turning to you -...
