Lenten Reflections

day one of Lent

This Lenten season, we’ll be running a daily essay from a Lenten booklet I helped compile. If you’d like more information on the project, please read here.

Ash Wednesday, February 22

An interesting phenomenon will occur the week of Mardi Gras. Parish Office phones will be ringing off the hook. “When do you give out ashes?” “When can I come and get ashes?” And this will be verified on Ash Wednesday... READ MORE

Remember, You Are Dust

Above is a video of a famous song that was a big hit when I was, let’s see, maybe a freshman in college. It kind of works for Ash Wednesday, in a non-liturgical setting, that is. What’s kind of interesting about the video is it shows how the members of Kansas have aged over the years—how they are clearly on their way to becoming dust. As are all of us.

Of course, the song’s lyrics don’t go far enough.... READ MORE

Feast Before Famine

Live it up!

Do you have big plans for yourself for tonight? Are you clearing out the pantry of all sugar, eggs and treats? That’s how Shrove Tuesday got its reputation for being a day for pancakes.

I’m planning on our traditional pancake dinner, and then maybe some kind of ice-cream. Big treats before our 40 days in the desert. And prayers for a prayer-filled and blessed Lent.

Attention Single Girls!

New "Survival Guide" is worth checking out.
www.emmausroad.org

Just hours after reading Danielle’s shout out to Robyn Lee I received a book that we’ll want to get Robyn’s opinion on. And I’ll be sending it to my (single) oldest daughter for her opinion as well. In the meantime, I can tell you that The Catholic Girl’s Survival Guide for the Single Years by Emily Stimpson has a lot going for it. For those who judge books by their covers—need I say more? This one’s... READ MORE

Veggie Police

who's in charge of your kid's lunch?

A preschool student at a North Carolina elementary school recently had her lunch taken away and replaced by the school’s “healthier alternative” when someone noticed that the sandwich she brought didn’t meet the requirements for healthy fare.

Instead of the sandwich, the girl was given the cafeteria’s option, which included chicken nuggets and vegetables (which the child opted not to eat).

I could... READ MORE
