Family Charism

Embracing who we are is half the battle

Some weekends are better than others. Some Sundays can be particularly rough for us, if we end up just lazing around doing nothing. Because for our family, doing nothing sometimes leads to nothing good.

Yesterday, however, was a glorious Sunday for the family Balducci.

In the afternoon, we loaded up the boys and headed down to the river. For two hours, we walked on the rocks, waded in the water,... READ MORE

Privileged Place

He was supposed to take a nap. I was counting on his nap. There was an awful lot to do.

But sometimes little people have their own plans.

He climbed onto the couch and sat beside me as I typed.

“Mooosic, Mama!” he begged. “Moooooosic!”

I clicked to play one of his favorite songs and he snuggled into my side. His small body moved to the sound and I felt his warmth against me.

I typed and he swayed.... READ MORE

With Love, From Boys

Reader Aileen shares this photo of what she found after bedtime at her house last night.

If little boys are sharing their Lego men with her, Mary must be doing something right. I’m pretty sure she treasures these tokens of affection in a special way.

Soccer Mom Redux

My Goal: To Make It Through

Like my dear friend to the North (and many of you wonderful ladies as well), I too am in the midst of being a Soccer Mom.

Right now we are really in the throes because for the second season, I have four boys who are playing on six teams. Our oldest son plays for two teams at his school, and he and his brother are on a team together at the Y. The other two boys are each on a team as well. As you can... READ MORE

So I’m a Soccer Mom

I'm new to this. Help me out here.

We don’t usually “do” soccer around here. And I have been happy with that. Quite frankly, baseball, basketball, tennis, riding, and swimming keep me busy enough throughout the rest of the year and I am usually content to take the fall season off.

This year, though, we are playing soccer.

Well, some of us are. Others of us are sitting on a damp bench in a cold rain nursing a cup of ginger tea and wondering... READ MORE

Don’t Lego

In which an innocent mistake breaks the hearts of many

Somedays I am tempted to start a new column around here, one called “Did You Hear That Wailing?” Because there are those days that I seem to get pushed and tested and forced to deal with uncomfortable situations. Some days the wailing is from the boys. Some days it is from me.

Lately, those moments have included: clothes shopping with the boys (wailing from them); a recent trip that involved travelling... READ MORE

College Fair Fun

Help your child make a great first impression!

This week, I had the joy of representing my alma mater, the University of Notre Dame, at our local county college fair.  It was an eye opening experience!

As a local Alumni Schools Coordinator for Notre Dame, my job is to greet students, distribute literature, and answer questions about non-specific situations.  I don’t make admissions decisions or have any sway on whether or not a student is admitted. ... READ MORE

Patience, Please

Dealing with kids without losing your cool?

I was in the shower today, leisurely rinsing off soap, when I heard a shriek.  Camilla normally reads books by the door of the bathroom while I shower, but she’d wandered away, and something awful had clearly happened to her.  She was wailing.

I called for her but she didn’t come, so I bolted out of the shower, grabbed my towel, and ran around the corner, imagining her trapped under a piece of furniture... READ MORE

Catholic Baby Names

Just for fun...

I was doing some surfing this afternoon and came across this resource for Catholic Baby Names, which offers boy and girl suggestions and appropriate names by date.

Had I gone with their suggestions, instead of Eric and Adam, I might be calling my sons “Omer” and “Senator” based on their birth dates.

Had I been graced with daughters on these same dates, little “Wilfreda” and “Hiltrude” might be playing Barbies at my house.

On second thought, maybe consulting this resource may not have made my kids too happy!  What are the suggestions for your children’s Catholic Baby Names?
