Best Tastes of Autumn

Apple crisp tops my list

Nothing says “autumn” to me like apple picking.

All through my childhood, apple picking was a tradition in my family.  We’d wait for a nice day, pile in the van, and drive out to the orchard.

With so many of us working together it only took about fifteen minutes to pick several bushels of apples, but that was all the better.  It gave us plenty of time to romp between the trees and enjoy the fall... READ MORE

Simply Cake

It seems I’ve been doing a lot of baking these days what with all the birthday-ing going on around my house. Whose idea was it to have all these kids in the late summer anyway?

For birthday cakes, I usually use a cake mix and focus my energies on decorating the cake to the birthday child’s specifications. Ambrose’s recent birthday, for example, brought an “eagle clutching a fish” request. That’s trouble... READ MORE

Perfect Pie Crust

You can do this!

In this week’s Coffee Talk, Carolyn asks a question on a topic near to my heart: Pie Crust.

Is making a good pie crust an innate talent or will I, someday, learn to make one that doesn’t fall apart? The Pillsbury refrigerated ones are just so easy, but like learning to fold a fitted sheet, I’d someday like to make a perfect crust!

Other commenters contributed their recipes and now I can’t help but... READ MORE

Frying Extravaganza

Making donuts makes me happy

I made donuts this weekend.

Actually, I made donuts twice this weekend, which is certainly a record for me.

Last year my sister and I started a tradition of making homemade cake donuts and caramel apples to honor the coming of fall.

It’s not quite fall yet, but we’re anticipating the season, so we did it on Saturday.  The caramel apples turned out okay, but the donuts were kind of a flop.  I mean,... READ MORE

Roasted Red Pepper Dip

or how to get your kids to eat white navy beans

Funny that Arwen should ask about toddler snacking just as I was looking for a good excuse to share my favorite recipe for red pepper dip. Daniel had this dip with wheat crackers for lunch and I am sure Camilla would be a fan as well.

Kids love to dip. Their chicken nuggets, their french fries, their vegetables, their crackers, their bread sticks, their ... fingers. They just love to dip.

I have recently... READ MORE

Feeding Toddlers

Need suggestions for easy-to-prepare foods

My husband and I are greatly enjoying having a toddler, but one of the things that is much more complicated with a toddler than with a baby is food.  Feeding our daughter was so simple back when all she ate was milk!

Fortunately Camilla is not an extremely picky eater, although she is not noticeably adventurous.  She does become rather attached to certain foods - for instance, she eats so much whole-milk... READ MORE

Lunch Box Blues

This mom's got the blues over "bag vs. box"

I knew it was inevitable…

Adam took off for his first full day of eighth grade this morning with his lunch in tow, nondescriptly tucked into a brown paper bag.  His trusty insulated lunchbox and cool reusable containers tossed aside in favor of something more socially acceptable.

I shouldn’t have been surprised!  I remember Eric making the transition from box to bag back when he was in junior high. ... READ MORE

Black Forest Birthday Cake

awesomely easy

Though Stephen’s birthday was a few days ago, we had our family party today.

Last week, Stephen had a small pre-celebration of his birthday at my mother’s house. There, she treated him to a Black Forest Cake.

It was a hit.

Though for months he has been planning to have a chocolate-vanilla marble cake for birthday party, yesterday he told me he changed his mind. Instead, he wanted some more of that... READ MORE

Handi Snacks

Eating on the road is easy -- right?

Paul and I are packing up our brood tomorrow morning, hitting the road for an end-of-the-summer trip that will include a drive through the mountains, a visit to our nation’s capitol and several other stops along the way.

While we’re in the car, I’d like to pack a cooler filled with delicious, healthy food in order to both avoid fast food restaurants and save time and money. Where this gets tricky: the second day of our trip is our drive through the mountains, and I’d love to have a nice picnic for us at lunchtime. Do you have any practical suggestions for having some sort of moveable feast that can still taste fresh after being in the cooler overnight? Or am I shooting the moon?

Bumper Crop

How do you prolong the tastes of summer?

Can someone tell me how it got to be mid-August so fast? So many big projects intended…and only one of them accomplished—which I guess means the kids & I have had a good summer, right? (Say “Right.”)  One project I’m resolved to accomplish between now and September is reining in a mutant crop of basil which is taking over my garden (even intimidating the mint, which is not a shy plant, as you gardeners...
