A Medical Update

Hi friends and family! Since I’ve been very open with you over the past few weeks in sharing about my little medical situation and last week’s surgery, I wanted to give you an update on my post surgery appointment yesterday and subsequent diagnosis.
During last week’s surgery, additional tissue was excised and sent to pathology for analysis. After several long days of waiting, we learned yesterday... READ MORE
Stepping Out

As part of my “journey" to a better life with the 3D Plan, one of my favorite aspects of the program is that it recommends wearing a pedometer and tracking daily step count.
Luckily for me, the great folks at Sportline recently sent over a totally nifty pedometer for review. I’ve had pedometers in the past, starting with one that came in a McDonald’s salad a few years back. But this model, the... READ MORE

In early October, I shared with you - my Faith and Family Live! friends - that I would be treating myself to a mammogram in honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
I fessed up to the fact that I’d been negligent for the past few years when it came to tending to my own health care. I felt healthy and great, so it came as a bit of a surprise to me when my initial mammogram turned into a... READ MORE
Home Births on the Rise
Posted by Danielle Bean in Health on Thursday, November 20, 2008 8:30 AM
Once upon a time, every birth was a “home birth.” Just nobody thought to call it that.
Today, though, it’s not just the crunchy moms who choose to give birth at home. In some circles, giving birth at home is even considered trendy, feminist, and counter-culturally cool.
Last week, the New York Times reported on the growing trend of home birthing, even among New York apartment dwellers.
Home birth... READ MORE
Handling Doctor Visits

Camilla hates going to the doctor.
I know she is not the only one; judging from the noises and scared faces I generally observe at the pediatrician’s office, I’m guessing that doctor-scared kids are more the rule than the exception. And I can’t blame them! I don’t particularly like going to the doctor myself.
Somewhere between her one-year visit, when Camilla was still happily oblivious up until... READ MORE

I just came across this site that predicts when the flu is going to hit your area.
Google Flu Trends has found that certain term searches are good indicators of what ailments people are experiencing in various parts of the country. According to the site, it uses “aggregated Google search data to estimate flu activity in your state up to two weeks faster than traditional systems.”
Definitely worth... READ MORE

This week on the Catholic Moments podcast (click here to listen or click on the player above), I share two fascinating conversations with women who are striving to make our world a better place as they overcome their own personal struggles.
Ruby Gettinger is the star of “Ruby”, a new television show that chronicles her lifelong battle with morbid obesity. Near 500 pounds and fearing an early death,... READ MORE
Mindless Eating

Confession: Over the past several days, I’ve eaten a lot—a lot—of Maryjane candies.
I don’t even like Maryjane candies.
My stupidity reminds me of Mindless Eating: Why We Eat More Than We Think, a fascinating book I read and reviewed a couple of years ago.
The author asserts that when it comes to eating choices, we really are creatures of convenience. Making healthy eating easier and making... READ MORE
Journey Update

Back in October, I shared with you that I was embarking on a “journey” of sorts to a better life by starting the 3D Plan and reading the companion book Your Whole Life: The 3D Plan for Eating Right, Living Well, and Loving God.
I’ve heard experts say that if you practice a new habit or discipline for 21 days, you can make permanent change in your life. So now that I’m on day 23 of this particular... READ MORE
