Shaken

I experienced my first earthquake yesterday, but the roiling earth did not shake my foundations quite as much as the news that men are more sleep deprived than women.
Yes, even new moms waking for night-time feedings.
While mothers of young children often feel like they get no sleep, Dr. Buysee says the research doesn’t bear that out. “This isn’t going to be popular, but some studies show that mothers... READ MORE
Other People's Teeth

Today, my sixteen year old Adam has a routine dentist appointment. He’s capable of driving himself to see our awesome family dentist, but for some reason I still feel compelled to accompany him, to sit with him in the waiting room, and to hear the report that “no cavities” mean he’s been brushing and flossing (well, probably not flossing…).
While there, I’m supposed to schedule an appointment for... READ MORE
What Price Beauty?

Simcha Fisher had a thought-provoking blog post at the NCRegister today:
With the prevalence of plastic surgery and other cosmetic “procedures” this is something I have given a lot of thought to in recent years.
Though it might be tempting for some to dismiss all of it as materialism and vanity (Simcha does not, but some in the comments over there do), I find it interesting to think... READ MORE
Is Sunscreen More Dangerous Than the Sun?
Posted by AGroup in Health on Friday, May 27, 2011 9:45 AM
I’ve always considered sunscreen a no-brainer but recently I spotted a report circulating on Facebook that gave my mildly paranoid self pause. It turns out not everyone is convinced that sunscreen is a good thing.
The report in question comes from The Environmental Working Group. I’ll just admit up front that I know very little about this group. In general, I have some pretty serious concerns about... READ MORE
When You Can't Afford Diapers
Posted by Arwen Mosher in Health on Tuesday, April 05, 2011 10:37 PM
Wouldn’t it be awful if you couldn’t afford to change your baby’s diaper every time he needed it?
There are a lot of people who can’t. I imagine this article, from a New York news channel, gives only a tiny glimpse of the bigger problem.
Providing diapers to low-income families is an important mission, and this charity, The Diaper Bank, is tackling it. You can read more about them at their website.... READ MORE
Starting Dental Care

Last week my daughter asked me how long it was until our upcoming dental appointment.
“Nine days,” I told her, and her face fell.
“I can’t wait that long!”
Did I laugh inwardly at the absurdity of this? Yes, a little. But was I happy that my child is actually excited about a trip to the dentist? Absolutely.
We had our appointment today, and it went very well. Camilla was extremely cooperative, and... READ MORE
Why I Love My P90X Workouts
Posted by Danielle Bean in Health on Tuesday, February 15, 2011 9:04 AM
Hallie sent me a tweet yesterday afternoon asking my opinion of the P90X Extreme Home Fitness Workout Program.
Turns out this was precisely the motivation I needed for finally getting around to writing up that review I’ve been promising all of you for so long. So here goes ...
Dan ordered the P90X program last October. When the 12-DVD set arrived, he rather sheepishly suggested that I might be interested... READ MORE
Are You a Group Fitness Fan?
Posted by Robyn Lee in Health on Thursday, February 03, 2011 4:02 PM
If you noticed, many of us are writing about the snow and being stuck indoors. I have a normal tendency to hibernate in the winter, but this weather is even affecting my usual exercise routine.
I regularly wake up at 5:23 a.m. to get ready for the 6 a.m. group fitness class. I take a spinning class on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and a resistance weight-training class on Tuesday and Thursday.
Lately,... READ MORE
Sick and Tired?
Posted by Lisa Hendey in Health on Wednesday, January 19, 2011 9:52 PM
I’ve got a sick teenager at my house. As I type this, he’s swaddled in my bed with a wet washcloth on his head, fighting a headache. I think it has a lot to do with today being his first “real” day back at school, with too many recent nights of not enough sleep, and with a return to the grind.
But we also seem to be surrounded right now with people who aren’t feeling well. The flu, colds, and other... READ MORE
Not-So-Happy Meal
Posted by Lisa Hendey in Health on Tuesday, November 09, 2010 2:59 PM
I can’t tell you the last time I bought a Happy Meal at McDonald’s, but I do know that if this had happened when my boys were little it would have seriously cramped my style! The unhappy news in question - San Francisco’s decision to forbid restaurants from offering a free toy with meals that contain more than set levels of calories, sugar and fat.
Truthfully, if this ban helps stem the rising tide... READ MORE
