Sights and Smells of the Season

I’m easy to please.
I have spent the past few days with a big ole’ grin on my face. Just because I’ve been baking bread, making pies, chopping cranberries, and planning turkey side dishes.
I love Thanksgiving. Mostly for the homey sights and smells it brings into my home.
When I add cranberries to my bread batter, I relish their redness. I revel in the sight of a freshly baked pie cooling on my kitchen counter. I savor the scent of corn bread and sage stuffing.
How about you? What are you planning to cook and bake today and tomorrow? Who is coming to visit or where are you going? What little things do you love about this time of year?

Recently, in my hometown paper, food columnist Joan Obra wrote a fascinating column entitled “Rotten food in refrigerator adds up to too much waste”.
Sadly, Joan’s article is not online, but it left such an impact upon me that I wanted to share a few of her most important points with you here and get your ideas on the topic as well. Joan recommended that in advance of going out shopping for the... READ MORE

In case anyone’s been wondering how my laundry project turned out, I am officially declaring it a success. Today I emptied my laundry room floor of piles for the second week in a row, and I’m confident that I’ll be able to keep this up for the foreseeable future, barring any unexpected catastrophes.
(And yes, okay, the birth of our new baby in February is probably going to put a temporary crimp... READ MORE

Today, I offer you a lovely image for your weekend gazing pleasure: Behold, the glorious trash bag, as it sits awaiting its destiny at the dump, on my humble deck.
What’s so glorious about a trash bag, you ask?
Well. I have filled more than a few of these in recent days with broken Tonka trucks, miniature plastic shoes, random acts of styrofoam, and other unidentifiable substances found deep within bedroom closets and bottoms of toy boxes. Christmas is coming—no useless piece of junk is safe!
My policy about revealing the contents of these elegant sacks: Don’t ask, don’t tell.
Tell me that’s not glorious.
On-the-Go Gourmet

Our oldest son began his basketball season yesterday. I’ve been a little out of practice since the soccer season ended, so I found myself unprepared for the dinnertime rush.
As I finished up afternoon projects and prepared to drive Eamon to the gym, I quickly realized that the spaghetti and meatballs I had planned for dinner would not be happening.
As I put on my shoes and grabbed my coat, the kids’ meal plan changed to chicken nuggets with ... goldfish crackers. I am not proud of this, but these are the kinds of things that sometimes must be done.
Five-year-old Gabrielle, however, was more than pleased with my culinary efforts.
“Wow, Mama!” she beamed as she feasted on goldfish. “I think you have finally come up with a dinner that everyone likes!”

Life with one toddler and one in utero baby is many things by its nature. Fast-paced is not one of them.
My sister had her second child in July, and watching her deal with two kids has made me realize: I have a limited amount of time during which my life is going to be as simple as it is now. I should take advantage of it.
During the first months of my pregnancy I took advantage of it by spending... READ MORE
