Quitting Facebook? Not Me.

Are you into social networking?
Facebook buzz has reached a fever pitch this week as everyone’s favorite (or most detested) social network launches its initial public offering tomorrow. Some have questioned the skyrocketing value of Facebook, and plenty of others have questioned whether it has any merit at all and is not simply a collossal time dump. This article at CNN today discusses why one tech columnist won’t be ditching Facebook... READ MORE

Going Creative

How do you make it happen?

My mother - who’s been crocheting for years - recently took up knitting as well.

I’m happy for her, and not just because of the sweet little hats she makes for my babies. I thought the crocheting was cool too, but the knitting is special because she’s not doing it solo. She’s joined a weekly knitting group, and wow! She seems to be having a lot of fun.

Talking to my mom about it, I see how excited... READ MORE

Go Ahead And Say It

http://www.flickr.com/photos/wwworks/

Uncle Jerry passed away last week.

He was not my uncle, but that of a dear friend.

My friend and I have known each other since 6th grade, and after years of drama practices, sleepovers, high school, college and even volunteer work together, we know each other’s extended family as if it were our own.

One of our first road trips without chaperones was to visit Uncle Jerry and Aunt Do. I’ve forgotten... READ MORE

Preaching, Unplugged

My mom studied voice in college and at one time thought to be an opera singer.

At some point the trajectory of her life changed and she married, had kids and became a teacher instead.

She always has found some outlet for her singing though, and has transferred to all her kids—or to this one at least—a profound prejudice against the microphone.

American Idol, The Voice? I can’t bear it when singers... READ MORE

Home Birth on Letterman

a Friday funny

Thanks to friend of this blog Hallie Lord for this clip of the home birth movement’s recent foray into pop culture.

I’m afraid Dennis and I are unrepentant old-school types of the sort that thinks “natural” childbirth is where the father is in the waiting room with a cigar, and “eating clean” means observing the 3-second rule, but I can appreciate this nonetheless.

The Perfect Girl Gift

What's your suggestion?

With Confirmations, First Communions and Graduations approaching, it’s the season for giving. Last week, I received a query from one of our readers who asked,

“I have a daughter who will be graduating from college this year and would like to give her a special and meaningful gift that she can use throughout her life that will help her to always strive to be the woman God is calling her to be. Do... READ MORE

On Friendship

we know it's important - but how do you make it happen?

I was fortunate to attend the Behold conference last weekend. The speakers (especially the lovely, brave Kate Wicker) were inspiring and the Holy Spirit was definitely present there, not just in the Adoration chapel and during Mass but among all the attendees, women of every age and vocation doing their best to learn about God and serve him.

My twins came with me, and fortunately a friend came along... READ MORE

Hugs and Misses

What are your college kids doing for Spring Break?

This past week, for less than 3 days, my heart felt “just right” again… intact, happy, and in possession of a large (1/3 sized) chunk that usually lives across the country in Cambridge.

Eric was home! This year, for his Spring Break, Eric and a group of eight other dorm mates ventured to Southern California for five days of fun. We were able to pick him up late in the week, bring him home to Fresno,... READ MORE
