World Communications Day 2012 was commemorated yesterday, Sunday, May 20. The 2012 Catholic Media Promotion Day will follow on Wednesday, May 23 and Thursday, May 24.
Last year, on Catholic Media Promotion Day, we asked you to promote your favorite 3 blogs, 3 podcasts, 3 other media, 3 random Catholic things online, as well as your own projects. Additionally, we asked you to go to iTunes on that single... READ MORE
The Truth About Stem Cells
Posted by Rebecca Teti in News on Monday, May 21, 2012 10:49 AM
The secular world seems at last to be catching up to the Church in recognizing the limits of embryonic stem cell research.
In a recent interview with ABC News, Michael J. Fox, ESCR’s most prominent celebrity advocate, admits such research isn’t looking very promising.
He still doesn’t see the moral objection, nor has he recanted his previous support, but he at least acknowledges it isn’t nearly so promising as ethical avenues of research.
other avenues of research have grown and multiplied and become as much or more promising. So, an answer may come from stem cell research but it’s more than likely to come from another area,
As we’ve discussed here often (see here, here and here for example), researchers largely turned their backs on ESCR long ago because it simply isn’t as promising as adult stem cell research and other therapies.
It’s nice to hear it confirmed beyond pro-life venues.

“The richness is in me, in my heart and head, not in my pockets.”
This story about a 52-year-old Albanian refugee who earned a bachelor’s degree from Columbia University - while working as a janitor there - gave me a smile and a lift today. Maybe it will do the same for you.

This weekend I had the joy of being with both my mother and my paternal grandmother (as we call her, “Nana”) on Mother’s Day. I thought it was pretty neat that - with my children present - we had four generations in the room.
But imagine if we had two more than that!
From Charlottesville, Virginia, comes this sweet story: a photographer got the chance to capture six generations of women from a single... READ MORE

Hiccup-curing lollipops?
Seems strange, but 13-year-old Connecticut resident Mallory Kievman has invented them. With the help of a team of MBA students, she’s hoping to get them on the market this year.
The secret ingredient is apparently apple cider vinegar, which sounds like an unhappy flavor for a lollipop. But Mallory - who’s already perfected the formula for the “Hiccupops” - says she’s “tweaking... READ MORE
Nunsense

Last week comedian and philanthropist Bill Cosby & his wife attended the dedication of a community center they funded as part of St. Frances Academy in Baltimore.
Cosby’s wife, Camille, attended a school run by the Oblate Sisters of Providence, and this was part of her “thank you” to the nuns who educated her. As you’ll see, Mr. Cosby has some fun at the nuns’ expense.
On a more serious note, isn’t... READ MORE
Fortnight for Freedom

Have you read our bishops’ letter on religious freedom Our First, Most Cherished, Liberty?
It’s a powerful defense not only of our Catholic faith, but of the Constitution.
The close of the document calls for a “Fortnight for Freedom” to be observed from June 21st (the vigil of the feast of Saints John Fisher and Thomas More) to Independence Day.
Our bishops suggest this fortnight be observed with... READ MORE

My husband and I will have our tenth wedding anniversary this year, and I feel like we’ve been married “forever” - but we’ve got nothing on this couple!
Eunice and Lloyd Ford were married April 9, 1929, a full EIGHTY-THREE years ago. Wow.
And as a bonus, here are eleven babies around the world. So cute!

I know that we have a lot of bloggers here at Faith & Family Live, so I thought I’d share with you a special opportunity to submit your proposal for the first ever International Catholic Bloggers Summit being held at this year’s Catholic New Media Conference sponsored by SQPN.
Many of our friends here have been attendees at the past few CNMCs. You know that this is “the” event for bloggers, podcasters,... READ MORE
The Kindness of Strangers

Who’s up for a round of good news? I’ll go first.
Yesterday I took an elderly neighbor grocery shopping with me, as I occasionally do since she can’t get around alone.
My outings with her are a bit comical because the lady is a little deaf, mostly blind from macular degeneration, and has the creaking limbs of advancing age.
None of that is laughable of course, but she’s also spunky as can be and... READ MORE
