Discerning Vocations & Marian Devotions
Posted by Lisa Hendey in News on Thursday, September 02, 2010 4:43 PM
This week on the Faith & Family Live Cast (click here to listen or click on the player above) Arwen, Rebecca and I take on two wonderful topics. In our fist segment, we look at the topic of vocations, and the “Call within a call” that Arwen recently wrote about. The start of every school year is a renewed time to reexamine the work we are doing, to rededicate ourselves to family and work, and to... READ MORE
Stem Cell Developments
Posted by Rebecca Teti in News on Tuesday, August 31, 2010 12:00 PM
Embryonic Stem Cells have been in the news again.
Last week a federal district judge issued an injunction against NIH using federal funds for embryonic stem cell research.
He reasoned that the President’s executive order permitting such funding contravenes federal law, at least pending the outcome of a case working its way through the courts.
You can read more about that here.
In related news, a... READ MORE
Missing Fr. Red

Amidst the coverage of the aftermath of hurricane Katrina comes this touching portrait of a priest who’s still among the missing.
“Joe,” Ginart said patiently, “I’ve already told you. No cher, I’m staying. If it’s God’s will, I’ll get washed away. If it’s God’s will, I’ll go down with the church.”
There are some tributes and memories of him in the comments here.

"Mary Is Tired"
Posted by Rebecca Teti in News on Wednesday, August 25, 2010 2:00 PM
The only impressions I have about Christianity in Japan are snippets from the lives of saints Francis Xavier and later Maximilian Kolbe; the novel Silence; and this article from 2001 about the music of Bach leading to conversions.
I’m fascinated therefore by this 1970s subway poster meant to encourage people to yield seats to women with children.
If you click through to the whole collection, you’ll see a general fascination with Western images (and Jesus reminding people to take their umbrellas with them!), but this one is particularly arresting, I think, since it makes Mary stand for women and motherhood in a non-Christian culture.
Anyone more knowledgeable care to comment?
Coincidentally I’d been thinking about subway courtesy campaigns even before I stumbled across this image. More on that tomorrow.
Update: just ran across this article, “Why Christianity is Foreign to Japan.” (With a polite nod to Christopher Blosser.)
An Unfortunate Choice of Words
Posted by Danielle Bean in News on Tuesday, August 24, 2010 10:00 AM
Over the weekend, I blogged at our sister site, NCRegister.com, about Jennifer Aniston’s recent use of the “R” word.
I was intrigued by the discussion that followed my comments there.
I normally scoff at most forms of “political correctness” but I have to admit that the word retard, even when used in a joking or self-deprecating way—really does bother me.
This actually isn’t about Jennifer Aniston.... READ MORE

Simple, Powerful, Pro-Life Ad
Posted by Danielle Bean in News on Monday, August 23, 2010 10:00 AM
Here’s an amazingly simple and yet powerful pro-life ad. It was originally produced as a radio ad in Ireland, but was banned for being “too political.” Now, thanks to the power of YouTube and the efforts of Irish pro-life group Youth Defence, it’s finding a wider audience. Perhaps you can help pass it on!
