Real Life Hero

Apparently, my husband doesn’t think I cry enough.
How else to explain the fact that he suggested I watch this story about Louis Mulkey, the South Carolina basketball coach and firefighter who lost his life in the line of duty a little over a year ago?
The amazing story of his dedication to his team and their subsequent dedication to his memory is truly moving. Grab some Kleenex and see for yourself.

The ad at left is running in and on the buses of my hometown, Washington, D.C.
The American Humanist Association is spending $40,000 on a “good, not god” campaign for Christmas.
JoEllen Murphy, however, is not one to read such stories and tsk-tsk the state of things. Instead, she called the local transit authority and found out what it would cost to run a counter ad campaign. She found that with... READ MORE
A Thanksgiving Proclamation
Posted by Rebecca Teti in News on Thursday, November 27, 2008 10:00 AM
At left is the very first Thanksgiving Proclamation from President Washington.
Here are some excerpts from this year’s version.
“Thanksgiving is a time for families and friends to gather together and express gratitude for all that we have been given, the freedoms we enjoy, and the loved ones who enrich our lives. We recognize that all of these blessings, and life itself, come not from the hand of man but from Almighty God.”
“Every Thanksgiving, we remember the story of the Pilgrims who came to America in search of religious freedom and a better life. Having arrived in the New World, these early settlers gave thanks to the Author of Life for granting them safe passage to this abundant land and protecting them through a bitter winter. Our Nation’s first President, George Washington, stated in the first Thanksgiving proclamation that “It is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor.” While in the midst of the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln revived the tradition of proclaiming a day of thanksgiving, asking God to heal our wounds and restore our country.”
“On this day, let us all give thanks to God who blessed our Nation’s first days and who blesses us today. May He continue to guide and watch over our families and our country always.”
To that I think we can all respond, “Amen!”
Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!

Online Christmas Deals

I have never been one to get up at the crack of dawn (or earlier, actually) for the bargains offered by major retailers the day after Thanksgiving.
I prefer to stay home and enjoy a leisurely breakfast of pumpkin pie with coffee (Stop looking at me like that. You know you do it too).
The good news for us “lazy shoppers” is that some major deals can be found online this year.
Amazon has a page... READ MORE
Do You Know America?

Here’s a fun little exercise as we approach our national civic holiday, Thanksgiving.
As we thank Our Lord for the blessings of liberty among so many others, do we know how our civic liberty is maintained?
Try your hand at this 33-question civic literacy quiz.
71% of Americans can’t pass it --and don’t snicker, but elected officials actually do worse than the general public.
Guess what else... READ MORE

The Mother Letter Project
Posted by Danielle Bean in News on Friday, November 21, 2008 12:27 PM
Go figure. Someone has finally put together a cool, simple way for all kinds of moms to share, support, and encourage one another, and it just so happens to be ... a man.
Have you heard about The Mother Letter Project? It’s only the sweetest, simplest idea I’ve come across in a long time.
Simply stated, I am collecting a series of “open letters” from mothers, to mothers. Share your stories—no matter how raw or difficult. Share you concerns—no matter how foolish they may seem. Share your wisdom—no matter how you came by it. Share your mother story. The only request? Start the letter “Dear Mother” and sign it. I will compile all of the letters in a Christmas book for my wife. If you share a letter ... before Christmas, you’ll get your own copy of the letters.
Find out how to share your letter and get a copy of all the letters for yourself.
Motrin Messes Up

Have you seen this controversial new Motrin ad about baby wearing?
Behold, the power of the mom blog!
Over the weekend, the uproar caused in the mom blogosphere (and especially on Twitter) over the perceived condescension and misinformation in this ad led to Motrin‘s decision to remove the ad from their website.
I read a rundown of the Motrin-Mom controversy (including response from Motrin... READ MORE
