How to Love

a pro-life, pro-marriage message from a surprising source

The following video is inappropriate for kids, but I hope you’ll take a look at it.

It’s not from an artist or genre ordinarily to my taste, but I watched after reading about it at Dr. Alveda King’s blog. I’m impressed and heartened, and think you will be too.

Sin's The Thing

Elizabeth Scalia coins a meaty term for the objectification of the human person: “thing-nifying.”

She does so in the course of a lovely reflection on sci-fi author Terry Pratchett, an avowed atheist determined to take his own life before recently-diagnosed dementia gets too bad.

Scalia doesn’t pound him, which is refreshing. I have less and less taste for simply seeing people drubbed, no matter how... READ MORE

Emergency Back-Up Post

The Holy Father has been out fishing for men at World Youth Day in Madrid the past few days, and a better woman than I would be writing about it.

I, however, have just realized the back-to-school tax holiday in my state is about to end, so I’m off to buy uniforms and school supplies.

In lieu of soul-fishing, I offer you Soul Surfing, or rather Betty Duffy’s hilarious response to it. #3 is killer.

Faith-Filled Realism for Moms

Catholic Family Boot Camp

The approach of a new school year, with its many changes after a long lazy summer, is often a good time to reassess and update the family’s spiritual life as well. In addition, the coming of fall weather makes many of us feel more energized and ready for new challenges. A new challenge you may wish to consider is Catholic Family Boot Camp.

This slender volume give 30 days’ worth of simple activities... READ MORE

Pink Zebra Rosary Beads

Why not?

I saw this cute rosary at the Catholic Marketing Network Convention last week.

It’s a bestseller from Trendy Traditions, and I believe the name of that company tells everything you want to know about why there should be a hot pink rosary with zebra Our Father beads.

My only frustration at the convention was that most of the merchandise displayed by hundreds of companies was not for sale, but only... READ MORE

For Ladies Only

mentioning unmentionables

My favorite bra.

Although motherhood is my vocation and I wouldn’t take back one moment, my, ah, upper torso has clearly suffered the effects of nursing lots of babies.

Once I was able to toss the nursing bras for good, the hunt was on for the perfect bra to battle the effects of gravity. I’ve shopped many a lingerie sale at Penneys and Macys over the years. But in the end, there is only one style... READ MORE

The Hunger Games

What's your take?

After hearing many friends rave about the trilogy of books that kick off with Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games, I’ve decided to take the plunge and dive in for myself, to see what all the fuss is about. These seem to me to be among the most discussed books for young adults since the dawn of the Harry Potter series.

I haven’t quite finished the first book yet, but already know I’ll be moving ahead... READ MORE

Moms Who Are Happy

It’s the subtitle of Meg Meeker’s latest book that attracted me.

The full title is, The 10 Habits of Happy Moms: Reclaiming Our Passion, Purpose and Sanity.

If you scroll down the page at that link, you’ll find a short interview with Dr. Meeker, a pediatrician, in which she explains that she wrote the book because she wanted moms to enjoy their mothering more.

That struck a chord with me, because... READ MORE

Strange But Fun

Chesterton, anyone?

Strange but fun.

That was the conclusion of our book club when we met last evening to discuss the 1906 novel Manalive by G.K. Chesterton. Chesterton, a Catholic convert and one of the most brilliant essayist of the 20th century, is best known for expository works such as Orthodoxy, What’s Wrong With the World, and The Everylasting Man.

But he also wrote several novels. These can be an acquired taste,... READ MORE
