Celebrating One!

At 5:26am a year ago today, our little boy was born.
In celebration of his birthday, we had a casual family party this weekend. In honor of being an entire year old, the baby got his very first piece of cake all to himself.
At Camilla’s one-year party, she didn’t quite get the hang of the cake, instead choosing to smear frosting in her hair. Blaise, on the other hand, caught on right away, and was soon happily shoving fingerfuls of cake and buttercream frosting into his mouth. I started wondering if we should have given him such a big piece! He has eight teeth, after all, and we don’t want them to fall out prematurely.
When he wasn’t consuming sugar at an alarming rate, our little guy had plenty of fun playing with his cousins, grandparents, aunts and uncles. Grandma (my mom) generously made him his own set of beanbags, and he spent some happy time trying to stack them up, in between competing with his toddler cousin over who got to sit on Grandpa’s lap.
At cake time, we sang “Happy Birthday” to my little guy and I held him. (Actually, I wrestled with him to prevent his grabbing the lit candle on the cake, but you know what I mean.) The candle’s flame flickered and the whole thing suddenly felt surreal to me. My baby is almost a toddler. Our first 365 days with him: check, check, check. Done, and I know from experience that he won’t go back to being a baby! I love toddlerhood, so I’m not mourning his baby year, but it’s a good reminder to appreciate every day.
God blessed us incredibly on January 19, 2009. That I know for sure.
