Daily Lenten Meditations

«  March 2010  »

Sun Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri Sat
  • Pray Light a candle. Every time you pass that candle today, offer a prayer of thanks. Don’t ask for anything. Just thank him.
  • Fast Don’t cut corners. Even if no one will know, complete today’s work thoroughly.
  • Give Touch is a powerful thing. Make an effort today to touch your children: a hug, a shoulder rub, a tousled head -- especially the bigger ones
1
  • Pray Make five minutes in the morning, at midday and in the evening to be still, silent, and alone, only asking God to infuse your soul with his will.
  • Fast No noise today. Turn off the TV, the radio, the iPod. Find God in the silence.
  • Give Pay particular unsolicited attention to your least demanding child today.
2
  • Pray Begin a gratitude journal. At the end of the day, jot down five things for which you are grateful. Think upon these things.
  • Fast Remember the first time you had a moment alone with your first child. What did you promise him? Do that. Be that.
  • Give We can only expect what we inspect. For every task you assign today, follow through and before it’s truly finished ensure that there is praise from you.
3
  • Pray “My sheep listen to my voice. I know them and they follow me." -- John 10:27
  • Fast Every time a child interrupts you today, stop what you are doing and look into his eyes as he talks.
  • Give “Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless.” -- Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Speak kindly all day long.
4
  • Pray Ask God to show you how weak and small you are. Open your heart to see it.
  • Fast Don’t argue today. As much as possible give up, give in, give way.
  • Give When you are tempted to put on the TV for kids today, pull out a stack of favorite picture books instead. Invite the kids to join you on the couch.
5
  • Pray Take a walk, even if it’s cold or raining. Leave your iPod at home.
  • Fast Think of someone whose life you are tempted to envy and then choke out these words: Thank you, God, for the blessings you have given to X. Help me to see my own.
  • Give Think about the kind of person your husband married. Be that person for him today.
6
7
  • Pray "Love consumes us only in the measure of our self-surrender." -- St. Therese of Lisieux
  • Fast As you go about your daily routine today, remember that you are expecting someone very important for dinner tonight. Together with your children, work towards your husband’s homecoming as if you were expecting to welcome a king back to his castle.
  • Give “You can do nothing with children unless you win their confidence and love by bringing them into touch with oneself, by breaking through all the hindrances that keep them at a distance. We must accommodate ourselves to their tastes, we must make ourselves like them.” -- St. John Bosco
8
  • Pray Take this quote to prayer today and listen to God’s answer: “Real love is demanding. I would fail in my mission if I did not tell you so. Love demands a personal commitment to the will of God.” -- John Paul II
  • Fast Stop looking for encouragement and approval. Genuinely encourage and affirm someone else instead.
  • Give Let your child choose a huge stack of picture books (use that word “huge” when you ask her to gather them). Read them all to her today.
9
  • Pray Persevere. “He who does not give up prayer cannot possibly continue to offend God habitually. Either he will give up prayer, or he will give up sinning.” -- St. Alphonsus Liguori
  • Fast Don’t forget that the only pedestal you need ever stand on, is the one your husband and children build for you.
  • Give Focus on your home today. The world can find another volunteer, but your husband and children have only you.
10
  • Pray Insist on quiet from all your children during naptime today. Pray the Divine Mercy chaplet.
  • Fast We’re half way through. Compare yourself now only to yourself when Lent began. Tweak the plan.
  • Give Reach out to a local friend today. Reconnect.
11
  • Pray Ask God to make you humble and lowly.
  • Fast Don’t compare or complain. Do compliment.
  • Give Pack a picnic and go somewhere to eat it with your children. If the weather is prohibitive, build a tent in the living room and it eat there. Sit on the ground with them. Be fully present.
12
  • Pray Sometime before bedtime tonight, make time to pray with and for each of your children.
  • Fast Rise a little earlier and bring your husband breakfast in bed. (If it’s too late today, plan for tomorrow).
  • Give Plan a date night.
13
14
  • Pray Give thanks for food, clothes, and shelter. Listen to His plan for stewardship.
  • Fast Clean out the refrigerator today instead of eating lunch. Pull everything out and wipe it all down. As you do it, thank God for the food he provides for your family.
  • Give “We think sometimes that poverty is only being hungry, naked and homeless. The poverty of being unwanted, unloved and uncared for is the greatest poverty. We must start in our own homes to remedy this kind of poverty.” -- Blessed Teresa of Calcutta
15
  • Pray Before you read or do anything else today, pray this prayer, taken from the writings of St. Louis de Montfort: Lord, help me to imitate Mary's deep humility, lively faith, blind obedience, unceasing prayer, constant self-denial, surpassing purity, ardent love, heroic patience, angelic kindness, and heavenly wisdom. Amen.
  • Fast Give up thinking things have to be perfect.
  • Give As you do laundry today, bless the person for whom you are folding. With every crease, offer a prayer.

Christmas Home Tour

Will you share a photo of your home at Christmas?

During the Christmas season, it is a wonderful blessing to visit the family and friends and see their homes all decorated for Christmas.

Over at CatholicMom.com, I’ve decided to hold a little Christmas Open House and welcome you into our humble abode.

I’m no Martha Stewart, but it’s fun to lay out the decorations we’ve accumulated over the years and see our home warmly lit with candles and twinkling lights.  If you note the photo above, you’ll see that a random guitar manages to make its way into every photo - instruments have taken the place of trucks and lost Legos in my home’s decor, but they still signify that a “real family” lives in this home!

Would you like to share a bit of your home, all dressed up for the holidays?  How about a peek at your adorable family, all dressed up for Christmas Mass?  Please use the form below to share a link to your personal Christmas pictures of any kind and we’ll all pop in for a little visit. No need to do dishes or pick up dirty laundry.  We promise to bring a tray of cookies when we stop by!

I love this idea, Lisa! I’ve added mine.

Great idea~I only have a glimpse of our tree trimming decor~as we did a silver theme~that’s all the pics have uploaded…I need to do that!

In the background of the pictures you will see the plywood Christmas Tree Corner shelves my husband built for me. Allergies have forced us to abandon fresh trees.

Danielle - I can’t believe how tall you tree is!!  Loved your photos - thanks so much for sharing them.  May, I didn’t see any photos on your post - am I looking at the correct link?  It’s so fun to take a peek at the homes of our online friends!

this was a great idea ladies. thanks for the invite. danielle, that tree is so beautiful. i bet your house smells DELICIOUS! nothing beats the smell of a fresh cut tree. my mom has this “tree” spray she uses and it just isn’t quite the same!=)

I love fresh cut trees, I can’t have a fake one in my house!  Thanks for the invite! smile

Michelle, love it!  But that kitchen is far too clean - no fair!!  Thanks for opening your lovely home.  Lisa

so far everyone has such beautiful and elegant homes…...

Everyone has such lovely trees and decorations~very, very festive!  I’ve enjoyed viewing them and touring their home.

Enjoying the blog entries, I don’t write a blog, but I do have some Flickr photos of the Jesse tree & Advent calendars that we have this year. Click on website by my name…

I added yours to the links above saganaga—beautiful!

I linked to a picture of our…unconventional Christmas tree. It’s our first Christmas spent away from either set of parents and inlaws, just us, and we tried to make it special, although our place is rather small. It should make a fun contrast to all of your lovely decorations, ladies!

Fun idea. So here’s mine: Twitpic photo: Front door *holly* Merry Christmas. (I’m a Twitter microblogger…) Peace!

This years trip from Nebraska to my MIL’s cabin seemed to take forever,  first a snow day which delayed our departure for my son’s high school finals, then a flat tire in St. Louis which made us spend the night so we could buy a new tire in the morning, then freezing rain caused us to spend the night in Kentucky. Finally we made it to the cabin on Christmas Eve and decorated a little tree. We were SO happy to finally make it!

I just love this idea, and have enjoyed my peeks into everyone’s homes!!  I need to go back and give some comments now that I have more time. I finally jumped on the bandwagon myself tonight. I may post more photos on my blog in the next few days.  Isn’t it fun taking photos of those little things in our homes that put the happy in your heart?  Christmas stuff or otherwise, these are the things that make a house a home.  And our family of course. : )
Glad to be part of this.

I added my link (#24)!  Thanks for hosting this!  I wanted to participate in some other Christmas home tours but never got around to it.  Now that it’s *really* the Christmas season and it’s being hosted on one of my favorite blogs, I’m so glad to be a part of it!  Merry Christmas!

Thank you so much for hosting this lovely tour of homes!  I just posted mine…I’ll have to go grab a cup of coffee and come back for a nice long “visit” with all you lovely ladies!

Loved looking at all of your homes and reading about all of your different Christmas traditions.  Thank you all for sharing and Lisa, for thinking up such a great idea for a blog post!

I’m having too much fun with this. It’s felt like a new assignment from my art school days. I always loved new assignments.  So I did a ‘round 2’ around my house, camera in hand, just for the fun of it all. Drop over and see if you’d like!  And feel free to omment and subscribe to our blog!
