Clean Slate

This morning, we are off to the grocery store.
I’ve been putting off shopping for as long as possible for a variety of reasons. For one thing, I prefer to go without the big boys, whom I love dearly despite the extra money they cost me when we shop together. As they are at a local basketball camp this week, the timing seems right. I’ve also put off going because I need to make a menu (a challenge for me). Mainly, though, I’ve waited because shopping when the cupboards get totally empty seems so therapeutic, like a sweet catharsis. Out with the old (whithered and expired). In with the new!
I enjoy using up everything we can before going out for more. I don’t always do this, as we can’t go days and days without milk and we’re also (mostly) pro-toothpaste. So it’s not too often that I’m able to enjoy extended periods between grocery trips.
This time, however, things have worked out. My menu is planned, the boys are spoken for, and we are down to almost nothing. Tonight I opened the fridge to find a block of swiss cheese and two shriveled oranges. In the pantry, we have one can of tuna, three cans of artichoke hearts and a bag of beans and rice. The freezer has one block of frozen ground beef, which would be great to grill if we weren’t out of gas. That plus twelve frozen birthday candles rounds things out.
So grocery shopping it is! The best part is that as everything is empty, all the shelves will be nicely wiped down, ready for the new. Get ready larders, here we come.
