Clip, Clip, Clip?

My sisters put my son’s hair in ponytails.
See the picture? That’s the back of my baby boy’s head, with one pink and one coral colored elastic anchored firmly in his locks. Oddly, he didn’t seem to mind the humiliation, and I thought it was kind of cute.
My sisters don’t want to humiliate my son; they were just trying to make the point that we need to cut Blaise’s hair. It’s long enough to put in ponytails! Clearly too long for a boy’s hair! Needs to be shorn immediately!
I’m not convinced.
My brother-in-law, a country boy, insists that his sons’ hair be kept close to buzz-cut short. Every time I think my three-year-old nephew’s hair is getting just long enough to be cute, the next time I see him it’s been cut again. Makes me sad.
So when we had a baby boy, I made my husband promise that we could keep our boy’s hair longer than his cousins’. Bryan didn’t agree to give me free rein, but he promised to be flexible, and being a city boy, he has less strict standards than my brother-in-law too.
Blaise is ten-and-a-half months old and has not yet had a single one of his hairs clipped. His hair is starting to get a little bushy in the back, but he’s not sporting a mullet yet, and is still nearly bald in front. Ponytails notwithstanding, I don’t think his hair needs to be cut yet. Plus, the thought of my little baby getting his first haircut makes me a little weepy. So I’m holding out.
What’s your personal preference on length of hair for little guys? And did you feel bereft when your first boy got his first trim?
