College Life Begins

Starting the next phase of life...

Greg and I successfully navigated our journey to rainy Boston yesterday, completely unprepared for the weather.  Somehow in the midst of all the packing, we neglected to see the reports calling for rain the next few days.  We arrived at our hotel toting a mandolin, an electric bass, four rolling suitcases, and not a single jacket or umbrella.  We looked like a drowning middle aged rock band, but our spirits were high.

We decided not to call Eric the minute we arrived (well, Greg decided that, and I obeyed him), rather opting to check in and take a stroll over to campus.  Imagine our amazement when we ran into our son within minutes of stepping onto the campus!  He’d finished his dorm crew cleaning shift for the day, but needed to go sign his time card.  We gave him a quick hug and watched him stride off confidently with a new group of friends.

I think Eric had had just enough of sleeping in non-air conditioned dorms (or rather, not sleeping very much) and eating college food to take us up on our offer to join us for dinner at John Harvard’s (yum) and to crash on the extra bed in our hotel room.  So we enjoyed a nice dinner, waved goodbye, and heard him stumble back into the room some time long after we’d hit the sack.  After sleeping for a few hours, he was up and out again to finish his last day of pre-orientation dorm crew duty.

It’s amazing that within just a few days, he already knows his way around many of the buildings on campus.  Last night, he led us down to the St. Charles River and we stood on a bridge chatting in the rain about new friends, activities he’d like to try and his plans for classes.  I’m trying my very best to do a lot of listening and not too much talking - he seems to be well in control of things, although I do hope he’ll get a good night of sleep soon.

Today, we will head off for our shopping trip (thanks for all of the amazing suggestions!) and tomorrow will be move in day and dinner with his roommate and parents.  I’m hoping God sees fit to turn off the rain before we have to move him in - but if not, the sogginess will just be a part of the memories we are creating this week.

Please remember to continue to pray for all of the students on our college roll call list, and to add any additional names of students you know who are entering this new phase of life.

Thank you so much for the update! Sounds a little like a bootcamp experience. Probably good to stave off early homesickness and reinforce peer bonding. Great idea! Glad all is well. Hang in there!

As Our kids grow and take steps toward their dreams, we all have to go through the phase of adjustment to the new phase of life. It is stretching for all of us, but the possibilities on the horizon are awesome
