Creative Cakes for Upcoming Feasts

Bake up these beauties for the feasts of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary
Immaculate Heart of Mary

Reader Amy Cara really impressed me when she sent along the pictures of these gorgeous cakes she made (See the Sacred Heart one after the jump).

She writes:

“I wanted to share these pictures of the cakes I made for our Home Enthronement to the Sacred Heart of Jesus that we just celebrated recently. With the Sacred Heart and Immaculate Heart feast days rapidly approaching (June 19 and June 20 repsectively), I thought this would be a fun idea to share with your readers/followers.

I used a heart shaped pan.  I used boxed cake mix (I used strawberry cake mix because of the color, but it didn’t taste as good as I thought it would).  I would probably use vanilla next time. I made buttercream frosting and tinted the frosting with food coloring.  I used little ziplock baggies for the writing and decorations and cut the tips off.

I didn’t buy anything special as far as cake decorating supplies.  I just used what I had here at home. I was so pleased with the results and everyone loved them!”

The cakes are beautiful, Amy! Thank you for sharing this great idea!

Hi. I am Michael, amy’s oldest son. just to let you know my mom’s last name is cara and her first is Amy. Bye!

So sorry! I got it right in beginning and then mixed it up in the end.  I fixed it now. Thanks so much for letting me know.

These are beautiful. Makes me want to go bake one.

We made a red velvet cake and decorated it with yellow, orange and red frosting for Pentecost. I meant to take a picture but now it’s all gone! Well, I have grand plans for next year, and I’ll get pics then!

Beautiful cakes! If you don’t have a heart-shaped pan, you can use a square (9x9) pan and a round cake layer pan (cut the layer in half after baking). Set the square layer on one point, then put the 2 semi-circles against 2 adjacent sides. Frosting hides the seams. It’s a one layer cake this way.

These are wonderful & I have recently gotten into cake making & decorating on my own here as well.  I wonder if Amy or any other readers would have a great buttercream recipe to share?  I made some w/a recipe I had here for my daughter’s birthday party but it just wasn’t all that great to us.  Would love to compare others’ recipes!  Thanks for the great ideas & God bless!!!

I use the buttercream recipe on the back of the C and H powdered sugar box.  I find that it is the best recipe.  I’ve tried others and nothing compares.  But it has to be C an H powdererd sugar.  Store brands have a different recipe on the boxes.  Hope this helps.

If you would like me to post the recipe, I would be happy to.  Just comment again…

Amy, I would LOVE for you to post that recipe…I’ve never heard of the C and H brand so I’m not sure we have that in our neck of the woods.  I only know of Domino & store brands so I would VERY much appreciate it.  My son’s b’day is coming in August & although we will be making him a baseball cap cake, he specifically asked me NOT to make the frosting that I used for my 3 yo’s cake b/c he didn’t like it!  lol It wasn’t horrible but I would like to have frosting that he actually LIKES on his cake.  ; )  Thanks, Amy!!!

Here is the buttercream recipe I use.

1 lb. box of powdered sugar (I use C & H, but if that is not available, that is ok, use what is available in your store.)
1/4 milk
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1 stick butter (softened)

Mix all ingredients and beat with mixer for 2 minutes.
Too much milk will make the frosting runny and it will ruin your cake.  Not enough milk will be hard to spread.  Just play with it.
For this particular project with the 2 hearts, I made 2 batches of the frosting, separately.  I used many little bowls for all of my colors.
I hope this helps.
My mom used this recipe for years and I use it all the time for all of my cakes, decorating and frosting for sugar cookies.  My 4 boys fight over who gets to lick the mixer, spoons, and bowl!
Enjoy!

it’s a 1/4 cup milk - I forgot to give the measurement above!
Sorry!
Oh and margarine does not work as well and it doesn’t taste as good….

Amy, Thanks!  It looks suspiciously similar to the recipe I just used…I’m going to print & compare before I do anything.  My son is funny…he wanted to lick the bowl & mixer…just didn’t want to eat it once it was on the cake!  Aaahhh…boys, aren’t they just something else?!?!  Thanks again…can’t wait to give it a try!  God bless!!!

I like to use Wilton’s buttercream icing recipe.  You can find the recipe here:

http://www.wilton.com/recipe/Buttercream-Icing

There are also instructions on how to get the consistency you desire.  For instance, if I’m spreading the icing on the whole cake I add 2 tbsp. of light corn syrup.  I LOVE this recipe!

As a mom who actually owns a heart-shaped pan, I am tempted…

Just another idea for moms out there…our local library (and we are in the sticks here, believe me!) has MANY shaped pans available for borrowing.  I actually used their heart shaped, 2 tier pan for our daughter’s 2nd birthday last year & it was great b/c I didn’t have to buy a pan ... and there are SO many more to choose from ... might be worth a phone call.  ; )

Just Beautiful !!

I absolutely LOVE this idea!  I am a fairly new Catholic (3 years now this past Easter!) and I am really wanting to do things at home to celebrate feast days and other wonderful rituals of the Catholic faith.  I printed this off and I will be sure to make one of these!

Beautiful cakes and a fantastic idea! Thank you so much to Amy for sharing her creations and thank you to Danielle Bean for posting it. God bless the both of you!

I sent the page to one of our sister parish as they are going to have a dedication for their new Grotto and thought this would be a good idea for them as they are having open house.  Thank you all for sharing.  I may even try to bake one.
