Date Night Movie

In just a few short days, we have the perfect opportunity to send Hollywood a message that you and I are ready and willing to support a certain type of movie.
It’s not the latest blockbuster, or an R rated romp, but rather a nice, clean movie with a solid message. It only has one “name” star - and some of us had a crush on him in the 80’s.
No one gets killed, no aliens land on earth, and no one uses the “F” word. It’s unapologetically Christian and features characters who pray and talk about God.
The movie in question is Fireproof, and it opens on Friday, September 26th in theaters around the country. Starring Kirk Cameron, Fireproof tells the story of Caleb Holt and his faltering marriage. Caleb and his wife are on the brink of divorce, when Cameron’s character accepts a “love dare” from his father, agreeing to put off signing divorce papers for 40 days while he attempts to salvage the shreds of his marriage.
I saw this movie back in July at a special screening. Sadly, my husband was committed to an event that night with our children and was unable to attend. I missed him greatly that night and vowed to see the movie again when we would be able to attend together as a couple.
Fireproof is not a Catholic movie, but is being supported and promoted by faith filled Catholic leaders and clergy around the country. There are tremendous Catholic resources in support of the film here at the Fireproof website.
As I sat watching this movie, and admittedly dabbing tears from my eyes at its climax, I couldn’t help but wish that this would become the latest blockbuster - that families would come out in support of this movie in such numbers that this genre of movie would become more the norm than the exception.
I hope that you can find time in the next week to take your family to see Fireproof. You and your husband will walk away enriched by the experience, and your children will get the message that our faith in God and our commitment to sacramental marriage are life’s greatest blessings.
